The Ewok Films

Gordie

Captain

I never did watch these back in the day. I only recall the title of the second one. The Battle for Endor. I don't recall the first at all. I am not sure why I didn't watch these when they were originally released. But I was in grade 4 when RotJ was released and even back then I thought the Ewoks were too cutesy.

But my point is I have been compiling a list of movies that I can watch with my niece. Since I have never watched these I thought they would be a great addition, but I just found out that they are not on Disney+. I went to IMDb to see what's up. Written by Lucas but the production companies are Lucasfilm and Korty Films. Korty Films produces Sesame Street according to IMDb. So no doubt there is some legal stuff going on there. Does anyone know exactly who owns the rights to the Ewok films?

And feel free to talk about any Ewok movie subjects. Probably won't get a lot of action here anyway. lol

EDIT: So only the first film has 2 production companies. The Battle of Endor is solely Lucasfilm.

I have a soft spot for these two. Probably helps that I was the right age to go see Caravan of Courage in the cinema. The opening act of the second movie is brutal AF, which is why I like kid's movies from the '80s. Drowning horses, family murder, all that good stuff. ;)

I'm always happy when they bring elements from old SW into the new canon material. Like the Blurrgs in Clone Wars and Mandalorian.

That's another reason I want to watch them. Looking through the photos in IMDb I noticed those Blurrgs. That was cool. I am sure I am missing some other cool things by not have watched the films, regardless of ratings it would be worth watching for that alone,

They might not be streaming, but they are on DVD, and are available from 3rd party sellers on Amazon. I loved these movies as a kid, but haven't watched them as an adult, so I have no idea how they hold up today.

I'll warn you right now, neither of these films have aged well. I mean, it's not 'Holiday Special' levels of cringe, but it's up there. Child acting is understandably dodgy at the best of times, and here the child is very young. So young that IIRC she couldn't actually read yet to learn her lines, so they had to feed them to her between takes.
The older mid-teen brother (who seems to have been mostly cast for his very passing resemblance to Mark Hamill) is WAY overdoing the cheese, which doesn't improve things. There's also something very weird going on with the Wicket mask. I presume Warwick had grown out of the original and they didn't have the budget or talent on hand to make a new one that didn't feature an unnerving 100 yard death stare...
At least the second movie has that bloke from 'Cocoon' and 'The Thing' (I gather he's mostly known in the US for diabetes related adverts?) to add at least some gravitas to the whole thing.
For context though; as a child I watched the VHS copy of Battle for Endor we taped off the telly so much I wore it out. Never got to see Cavern of Courage until the DVD came out in the early to mid 2000's.

Honestly, if you're looking for a Lucasfilm produced fairy tale fantasy movie starring Warwick Davis that you can share with a little one, I'd sooner go with 'Willow'! ;)

Willow is most certainly on the list. Loved that one.

Out of curiosity, have you considered Studio Ghibli's animated movies? When my nieces were young I made point to find films that both I and they enjoy (they once brought a Barny the Dinosaur DVD for a visit, so I was motivated to preserve my sanity!) and I found great success with these films. Indeed a certain usually hyperactive motormouth was 1) utterly still and 2) silent for the entire *two hours* of 'Spirited Away', and she would ask to see it again almost every subsequent visit for years. 'My Neighbour Totoro' and 'The Cat Returns' also had oft requested repeat viewings.

Note though that I didn't show them 'Princess Mononoke' or 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind' as I felt they were a little too explicitly violent for their age at the time (about 4-8 IIRC), so probably check those two out on your own first to gauge their suitability.

Labyrinth fits two of those criteria, it's a (modern) fairy tale fantasy movie from Lucasfilm, it just doesn't have Warwick Davis.

Well to be clear, I wasn't looking specifically for a Lucasfilm fairy tale fantasy.

Sorry if there was some confusion.

You can find both Ewok movies on a single DVD for around $20 on ebay. That's a bit pricey for a DVD of that sort these days, but it's still better than before. For a while after it went out of print, the prices were outrageous, like $85 minimum. I kind of wish I had sold mine during that phase. I certainly never watch the thing!

I got them at a yard sale for a buck or two each, but never have gotten around to watching them. I saw them as a kid but forgot them almost immediately.
