Three freshman NBC series are getting full-season orders: The Event, Law & Order: Los Angeles and Outsourced are all getting nine more episodes.

The pickups are all shows produced by Universal Media Studios and represent NBC's first round of full-season orders.
The news does mean, however, that Event fans will have a stronger chance of finding out what "The Event" actually is -- sources say its reveal is planned for near the end of the first season.

"The Event" is averaging a 5.2/8 after four episodes, nearly 63 percent ahead of what NBC did in the timeslot last year, and it remains NBC's best-rated show on Mondays -- if not by much.

Is anybody else getting a little tired of Science Fiction shows on television claiming to have new and original ideas that are actually very "inspired" from decades old comic book and/or movie plots?

At least Fringe is well acted and interesting enough to hold my attention, although I keep expecting Dr. Fate and Black Canary to appear, or have this desire to stat out the characters for Gurps when I watch it.

The Event just seems to rehash plot lines that have already done to death. It even feels like that "three hours from now" flashback style comics were doing about four years ago.

Wait a minute. There's ANOTHER 'event'?

I thought we already knew what the event was - these beings who look human, but age much more slowly, crashed to Earth decades ago and are now trying to assimilate into human society.

^ No, all those useless flashbacks that don't advance the story will add up to be the actual event. :p

Not really. There's not much to come up with for originality and most of the old comic and movie plots you referenced stole from someone else. It's just a matter of how blatant they are.

Not having read any comics in at least a decade or more I can't comment on how much they're ripping them off and no movies spring to mind that are obviously taken from but they're at least making an effort.

But I'm sure you could suggest a better story no one's ever thought of? Truly unique and original ideas are hard to come by these days.

I've been watching this series but it's barely held my interest. It feels slow and plodding at times despite how much of "the event" has already been revealed. It's ironic how uneventful this series feels to me.

^ Sorry, but I hope you're not trying to suggest those are truly unique and original. (Which is a foolish idea anyway, it's the execution that matters)

♦Yeah... let's take a look at "originality" there.

Steven Spielberg's untitled alien invasion series, starring Noah Wylie. - Taken: The Series? Nothing known about this to claim it's original or not.

No Ordinary Family - ABC - The Incredibles in live action.

La Femme Nikita. The CW - Do I even need to point out the previous two films and long-running television series?

Betwixt Another CW series - Sounds like another witch/wiccan/magic series, Charmed, Supernatural, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie and a dozen other series beg to differ.

Tower Prep and/or Unnatural History. - live-action shows on the Cartoon Network - I've seen Unnatural History and it's the closest to "original" yet which is to say it's a detective series with children.

Riverworld. - Syfy miniseries - Also a failed movie series from a few years ago, also from Sci-fi and taken from the books of which I did not read but heard second-hand were not the same.

Undercovers. J.J. Abrams' comedy about a husband-and-wife spy duo - Mr & Ms. Smith: The series.

Terra Nova. Another Spielberg show, this time for Fox. - No idea but sounds like Earth2.

Being Human (U.S. remake) - Syfy - (U.S. remake) says it all.

Torchwood (the U.S. remake) - See above, and the original series.

The Cape. Another superhero show — NBC - Heroes? No Ordinary Family? Batman? Superman? Any comic with a superhero? The synopsis from this is he's a regular guy who does detective work. IE; Batman. Alternatively, there was a series about a vigilante judge from the 90's I can't recall the name of with essentially the same premise.

The Walking Dead - Zombies, probably the most original concept for TV yet although they make plenty of guest appearances on supernatural/horror series and around Halloween.

Star Wars: The Live-Action Series. See Clone Wars or well, the OT or PT.

So of all those, maybe two or three show some originality, possibly. But not really. Most are just adaptations of either movies or books that have existed for years, sometimes decades. I won't say I'm cynical or originality is dead but none of these says "innovative" to me.

Whining about a lack of originality in TV is a bit silly. Anything mind-blowingly unique isn't going to appear on TV in the first place because it has to be accessible enough for millions of people to follow it. It also doesn't matter if something isn't all that original--only the execution matters. An old idea executed in a competent and fresh manner can be fun and thought-provoking. You could have an innovative story concept and still botch the hell out of it.
