Yes, the week of the Eurovision Song Contest is at hand again!:biggrin::D
https://eurovision.tv/
The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 is set to take place in Liverpool, United Kingdom, after Ukraine, winner of the 2022 contest with the song "Stefania" by Kalush Orchestra, was unable to meet the demands of hosting the event due to security concerns caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The contest will be held at the Liverpool Arena, and will consist of two semi-finals on 9 and 11 May, and a final on 13 May 2023.
For the very first time, viewers watching in eligible countries not participating in this year’s competition will also be able to vote in each Semi-Final and the Grand Final.

Are you planning to watch the ESC 2023?
What songs are your favorites this year?
Who do you think might win this year?
What songs are you planning maybe to vote for?

I seem to get more obsessed every year. Eurovision parties for the final have become a big event for many years. It's the one constant in my life.

I just finished the first semi, and it's solid and full of a few of my favourites, with the weakest for me being Croatia, Ireland, and Azerbaijan.

If nothing else gets through, Sweden, Israel, and Finland are my firm faves from today.

EDIT - Croatia got through which surprised me, though it's definitely quirky. Very happy with the qualified countries though.

Semi 2 was definitely weaker than the first, but there were still mostly good songs that went through. I'm not a fan of Albanian music or any of their past entries, but I should have put money on them qualifying because they always do.

Who put Poland through? Austria is joyfully bizarre and I voted for it too.

Off round my friends' house for a gathering with food and booze this evening. Should be a good night. :D

We really enjoyed Germany in our little group but finishing bottom was a bit much. :D That's the trouble with rock songs, they either go over really well like Zitti E Beuoni and Hard Rock Halleluyah, or they don't register.

I liked the quirky songs by Finland and Austria, even if I didn't want them to win. Finland being second was strange!

I'm glad Sweden won. Loreen is a star, and even if Tattoo isn't as memorable as Euphoria, it's still pretty damn catchy. And next year being in Sweden has a nice ring to it on the 50th anniversary of ABBA winning.

I realty liked Cha Cha Cha. I voted for Finland and Estonia.

Sweden's entry was very slick and polished and she's a great performer but it didn't really connect with me, I preferred Norway and was glad to see the public at least liked that. Do love the 50 years of Abba conspiracy theory!

Disappointed that the UK finished next to bottom. Don't remotely think it should have won, maybe not even got onto the left hand side of the board, but it's catchy and it wasn't remotely the worse song so I'd have liked to see it a bit higher. Her performance seemed a little underpowered, and I understand host countries (even de-facto host countries) traditionally don't do well and being in last place didn't help because I think by then most people have made their mind up (;)) and are suffering from fatigue.

Then again appearing later in the show seems to be the best place to be going on previous finals so maybe I'm just making excuses. Was it Sam Ryder/Spaceman good? Not remotely. Was it better than most of the shite we've sent in the last ten years? I'd say yes.

I wonder why we even still bother to send anyone, we always end up in last place anyway... we should face it, nobody likes us

Not sure if you're referring to the UK or Germany, but obviously the UK finished second last year and if the invasion of Ukraine hadn't happened who knows if Sam Ryder wouldn't have won it.

Re Germany they were 4th in 2018 and won it in 2010

The ESC was always a nations popularity contest, as evidenced by neighbors awarding points to neighbors even if the song and performance was utter shit ( at least it used to be, i haven't watched in years).

Germany apparently is unpopular, i can't really imagine having such bad songs several years in a row to land last place. There is a discussion going around if Germany should retire for a while but then again who cares about that ;)

I liked Finland best. It fulfilled the brief of being quirky plus catchy,.

Serbia seemed like "Edgelord: The Song".

My native Germany sent another no-hope entry. Last year's seemed okay but this year was like that anime person again, just weird without making it mean something.

Austria was funny and catchy in their music video but lame on stage. The Britsh's entry fell short because of the voice, too, but the staging was good. But that's the reason I never to go a music concert - the live singing sounds like karaoke instead of the quality you hear on radio or see on YouTube.

What's your opinion on Swedish plagiarism? There are videos showing that Loreen's intro is the same as the early 21st century song "U plenu".

It used to be France and then the UK who ended up in last place all the time but nowadays it's us. We could have the best song in Eurovision history and we'd still come in last place because nobody likes us - at least at the moment, this sort of thing can change - so yeah, I think it would be best if we just didn't compete for a while. Might help.

Finland really should have won. I actually kinda liked the German entry, it's not remotely my kinda music but they threw themselves into it and played to the crowd and I respected that a lot. They didn't deserve to come last. That said they were never going to win it.

If 2022 proved anything for us it's that taking it seriously + great song + great vocalist and live performer = good result. (It did help that Sam Ryder seems genuinely like one of the nicest and humblest people on earth.)
