I'll add the last scene of The Shawshank Redemption. Simply perfect.

It was a good scene. But consider what it would have been if they didn't show Robbins on the beach, and all you have is Red's hope, and not the certainty that he would meet his friend again?

Sometimes ambiguity is not ideal.

One that just popped into my head is Full Metal Jacket. Considering the leadup to the scene, it's probably one of the most surreal moments of any movie to see them singing such a happy song after the horrors that preceded (although maybe it shows the duality of man ).

The thing about the ending is as scream inducing as it is for us, from an internal world of the plot, we know his life isn't uncertain. He'll figure out within a minute whether he's still in a dream or not. As far as thematically, it works because it shows he doesn't care. He's where he is happy.
