The End

The Breakfast Club. Fist in the air, jumping forward. Like, it didn't matter who you were-anything was possible and anyone could succeed.

Agree w/scottpens about Planet of the Apes.

Lookinglassman had it right about Jonathan E, too.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

And for sappiness-It's A Wonderful Life.

I'll add the last scene of The Shawshank Redemption. Simply perfect.
Perhaps.

It was a good scene. But consider what it would have been if they didn't show Robbins on the beach, and all you have is Red's hope, and not the certainty that he would meet his friend again?

Sometimes ambiguity is not ideal.

One that just popped into my head is Full Metal Jacket. Considering the leadup to the scene, it's probably one of the most surreal moments of any movie to see them singing such a happy song after the horrors that preceded (although maybe it shows the duality of man ;) ).

Most resent favorite is the ending of Inception, you just watch that spinning top, waiting for it to begin to wobble.

Me in the theater:
(under my breath) please fall, please fall, please fall, please fall
*movie cuts to black*
(speaking audibly) Oh come on!

The thing about the ending is as scream inducing as it is for us, from an internal world of the plot, we know his life isn't uncertain. He'll figure out within a minute whether he's still in a dream or not. As far as thematically, it works because it shows he doesn't care. He's where he is happy.

I started to talk about the endings a bit, but then decided I didn't want to risk spoiling them for people who haven't seen the movies.

Aliens
Amadeus
American Beauty
Boogie Nights
Casablanca
Citizen Kane
The Devil's Advocate
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Raiders of the Lost Ark
A Single Man
12 Monkeys

They're not movies, but Twilight Zone episodes were known for their endings.

"It's a cookbook!"

Or Futurama making fun of the Twilight Zone (paraphrased):

A mad scientist decided to combine the most evil animals in creation. Surprise twist: the end result is man!

The ending of Fight Club. I love that haunting music playing as they hold hands and watch the world end.

The last scene of Matrix 1 was pretty cool at the time. WTF? He can fly now!

The ending of Usual Suspects.
