The Emissary (show)

Nearly perfect, but it does have a couple of weak points. What about the two-parter would you change.

I'd change Kira's bitchiness to just a don't give a crap attitude.

Id find out if there was any repurcussions to the Cardassians almost blowing the hell out of the station with a Federation presence aboard. Id also have something about Sisko requesting Starfleet buildup to protect the wormhole as its so valuable. Around the 4th season, we just kinda see the station fully armed without explanation.

^ It was explained in the episode Way of the Warrior that Starfleet refitted DS9 during Season 3 and between 3&4 because of the Dominion threat.

Kira and O'Brien are at work on a new station near
Engineering. (This will eventually be Worf's Station.)
O'Brien's double checking the systems.

O'BRIEN
I never thought I'd say this, but
right now I'm glad the Dominion's
around. Otherwise we never
would've started these upgrades,
let alone have them finished by
now.

KIRA
There's something to be said for
incentive.

O'BRIEN
I just hope everything works.

KIRA
You're saying you're not sure?

O'BRIEN
The way I see it, there are two
possibilities. Either
everything'll be fine...

O'Brien reaches into the panel to tweak a control.

KIRA
Or?

O'BRIEN
(throwaway)
Or we'll end up blowing the
station to pieces.

KIRA
Let's hope we don't have to find
out.

I wouldn't have had the Sisko submit to Picard. That (tragically) made the Sisko seem like an inferior man IMO, which is especially of a bad thing to do in the first episode of a new series. The Sisko should have made up with Picard in a throwaway line much later in the series, or not at all. Or on second thought, even better, Picard should have submitted to the Sisko in Emissary, and firmly established the Sisko as the superior man.

Oh, they couldn't have Sisko have the superior ground on Picard. They would have risked alien-ating all the TNG fans that they wanted to watch the show. They get away with Sisko making up with Picard because Sisko was a Comander and Picard a Captain.

I would have added a line where Kira would tell Jasad he'd be risking a war with the Federation if they destroyed the station, and then Jasad saying some cold-blooded shit like "maybe...but it'd be worth it if we get to kill some more Bajorans first" or something.

I'd rephrase the Sisko/Picard last scene to make Sisko more powerful. I would have Picard bring up the issue of Sisko resigning, then Sisko coolly and assertively states "I think this is where I belong".

Then after a small beat, Picard acknowledges and says "Very well....good luck Mr Sisko" and Sisko responds with "Thankyou....Captain" and he'd say the word "Captain" in a more pleasant and respectful tone, compared to the hostile way he said "SIR!!!" back on the Enterprise. Picard then nods and leaves.

That line would both signify that Sisko wants the job...and there's also a subtle acknowledgement between the two that the earlier tension has been resolved.

Both retain their honour (Sisko not blaming Picard anymore) and dignity (Picard being respected).

...OTOH, I find it quite intriguing that the hero of this new, in many ways unexpected show is introduced as a flawed man who continues to hold a grudge against a character us Trekkies hold in high esteem. It certainly helps establish that this show won't be the same-o, same-o!

It sounds quite natural that the TNG era mankind would have lots of individuals who fart in Picard's general direction. It also sounds natural that a weak, troubled man would end up in command of this backwater space station. And it certainly sounds natural that mere couple of days chatting with exotic aliens wouldn't alter several years' worth of well-justified animosity.

I thought the Emissary was almost the perfect premier for a new Trek...not sure I would change anything. The story with so many sub plots never stalled for me.

As I mention in another thread, Bashir should have been written in a much more sophisticated and interesting way. To me, and I LOVE this episode, he is the weak link. I am not a huge Avery Brooks fan, but I gotta admit he does a great job in this one from the very first scene.

I thought Bashir was written fine. It set the stage for a huge evolution of the character by the end of the seven years.

Isn't The Emissary a TNG episode?

Emissary is the one you want. :p
Big deal. I always mix them up, anyway. But you know what that poster meant...

;)

You know, I am by far NOT the nitpickiest fan on this board. It would have gotten said - only quite possibly by someone with alot less tact.

As mod of this forum, I tend to try and close the openings for nitpickers to take shots at the gang in here. And most of the regular posters in here do the same for me when I make a mistake. Which I do, by the way, on a fairly regular basis. Shit, just last month I posted something on one thread that belonged in another, and they had to correct me. We do it all the time.

Photon knows where I'm coming from. And it's not from where you think.

Well, I wondered how it would work had Ro Laren been there instead of Kira, as was originally intended. I'm pretty satisfied with the show how it turned out, though; after "The Cage" and maybe "Where No Man Has Gone Before", it's Trek's strongest pilot.

Nana is a stronger actress, IMHO!

It's really hard for me to find any aspect in the premiere that I would want to change. For me, it is by far the strongest modern Star Trek premiere. Not only is it really went written, but it's also very well acted and put together. I don't think I would make any changes to it.
