The Elusive Silver Box Set

Hi Guys

I came to this forum because after 1 hour of googling I am no closer to finding out how much is my silver box set worth.

The main reason why I am asking is because a guy had tracked me down and offered roughly $300 USD for the entire collection. I can not remember to save myself how much I paid for them and money is tight right now and I have the movies on my external HD. So why not I thought. So I started browsing for a price

Yet when I tried to see how much the collection is worth I could not find the box set that I have.

I have uploaded the pictures here:

Sorry guys, I do my best to try not to appear like a newbie but I dont know where I should be looking anymore. So any advice would be appreciated. Cheers.

They were quite expensive when they came out around 100 EUR per set on Amazon. In fact, they are quite difficult to find and purchase now (I can't find them in any regular store). I would not sell them especially at 300 USD unless I really needed the money. Anyway, if you really need to sell them try to get a better price since they are "a rare antique" now.

It's only valuable if someone values it. Given the content is freely available elsewhere for a cheaper price, you're relying on effectively a packaging fetishist. Even among the loyal fans of Star Trek, that's not going to be too common.

Basically I'd say sell. Maybe try and get a bit more if you think the buyer will negotiate on the price. You may never get another opportunity, especially if the show comes out on Blu-ray in the future.

Those were the official German DVD sets. They've since been replaced by simpler cardboard half-seasons and are out of print. The other 24th century series had similar plastic casings - DS9 had dark blue ones, and Voyager was a bright red. They all are quite the collector's item.

Three years ago, Amazon.com sold the regular US seasons for $31.49 a pop, and I sold all of those bulky plastic ones I already had on eBay. Because of their out-of-print status, I got more money than I initially paid for them - more than three times as much as replacing them with the US seasons cost me.

One word of advice: If those casings don't matter to you, do not buy the European sets. The A/V quality is inferior to the US versions, and two DS9 episodes are cut.

I just realized that you're looking to sell, not buy. As I said these are collector's items, and I received a very handsome sum for them. Don't sell under EUR 90.00 each.

Nice to know all the money I forked out for those sets at time of release hasn't entirely gone to waste, and they retain some value.

On another note, I'm happy for this thread to exist as long as it remains an abstract discussion of value, and there's no attempt by the OP (or anyone else) to sell their own sets on here, as the board administration doesn't permit solicitation.

I know the BBFC cut a couple of headbutts, but didn't know the A/V quality was inferior. How so?

The PAL video quality is always a tad fuzzy in comparison to the native NTSC. PAL has more horizontal lines, so the conversion fills those with extrapolated data during the conversion.

The difference of frames per second between PAL and NTSC leads to a PAL episode running 4% faster than the original. Audio is sped up accordingly, so everything you hear is at a higher pitch. Very noticeable with dark voices like Michael Dorn's or Patrick Stewart's. Plus, if you have perfect pitch, listening to the music being a half tone off sounds rather odd.

Also, the cuts the BBFC made had nothing to do with headbutts. The cuts were one broken neck and one instance of Klingon blood brotherhood.
