The Elric Saga to be a TV series

That's right, Michael Moorcock's famous saga/trilogy will be adapted as a TV series:

New Republic Pictures’ Brian Oliver and producer Bradley J. Fischer acquired the exclusive rights to all works in Michael Moorcock’s seminal fantasy-horror series The Elric Saga. They are beginning to shop the property for series, with Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead and The Shield) and Prison Break and Star Trek: Discovery‘s Vaun Wilmott attached to adapt the sci-fi fantasy tale.

Fischer and New Republic see the Elric saga — which begins with the 1972 novel Elric of Melniboné, as having cross-platform franchise potential. They are first leaning into the TV series with Mazzara & Wilmott. The novels are sensual and atmospheric sword-and-sorcery tales that center on the title character, a brooding albino warrior who presides over an unruly, decadent island nation. The novels follow Elric on a series of adventures, in which he is betrayed by his cousin, sent into exile and attempts to come to terms with his own humanity. The series comprises 11 novels and a number of short stories and has been adapted into several comics and graphic novels.

The Elric Saga to be a TV series

About time that this series was turned into a movie or TV series-long past time.

Apologies if this news has already been posted.

The thread title is misleading, the people who acquired the rights are just beginning to shop it, they haven't even sold a pilot script. This could all lead to nothing, it's not going to be a tv series at the moment, some people just hope they can turn it into one but that doesn't mean it will happen.

Any network or streaming service that looks at this is going to see it through a Game Of Thrones lens.

Hiddleston would be epic.

Moonglum?

Mark Strong for Yyrkoon.

Could be great. Any guesses on which channel or streaming service will do this?

I wonder will they touch on any of the other Eternal Champions?

That's a good question. The BBC has recently announced they've acquired the rights to the first series of Hawkmoon books.

The Champion Eternal was really developed as a concept with the Erekose and Corum stories, and was retconned into Hawkmoon, then Elric. The BBC is doing the first Hawkmoon series that doesn't touch on the concept at all, but the second one goes whole hog on the entire concept.

As such, it would be easy for the Hawkmoon show to just end with the first set of books and not have to deal with it and the Elric show could just as easily omit the two crossover tales and probably not really lose much.

For myself, I would hope that isn't the case. Like many, I was introduced to Moorcock's work via Elric (first the comic by Pacific Comics, then the books), and "Sailor On The Sea Of Fate" was where my love really took off as I was introduced to these other incarnations who also had their own series of books. I remember tracking down each book of each series and really loving the various nods, subtle or obvious to the other Champions or books. So for me personally, it would be a great loss to not have that element in the shows. And in this era of shared universes, I'm hopeful that they would not ignore that aspect, but rather capitalize on it.

I recently began re-reading the Elric series in publication order, and just finished "The Flame Bringers" and was struck by how GoT it felt. Especially the huge Mongol / Dothraki army and the use of dragons. Though for the dragons, I'm wondering if they'd use fire or the flaming venom of the books.

Hiddleston would be epic.

With the right make up, I could buy Hiddleston as Elric. Moonglum is a harder choice as he's usually described, IIRC, as not really handsome and having an ugly mouth or something along those lines. If this were 30 years ago, Willem DeFoe would've been my choice for Moonglum as he has unconventional looks.

As a fan of MM, I'm happy and hopeful that both of these get made, but won't get too excited until casting and set pic's start showing up.

The very idea prompted me to revisit :

I am amongst friends.

My most seen band by a long way since my first show back in 1980. Alongside Hawklords, Space Ritual, Inner City Unit, The Psychedelic Warlords and so on.

Maybe Michael will suggest they do the music...

This was already my favorite BOC song and later finding out it was about Erekose / the Eternal Champion just made me love it even more.

I forgot that one because I identify it with the movie Heavy Metal so much.
