Synopsis

It’s Christmas Eve, 1938, when Madge Arwell comes to the aid of an injured Spaceman Angel as she cycles home. He promises to repay her kindness – all she has to do is make a wish. Three years later, a devastated Madge escapes war-torn London with her two children for a dilapidated house in Dorset. She is crippled with grief at the news her husband has been lost over the channel, but determined to give Lily and Cyril the best Christmas ever. The Arwells are surprised to be greeted by a madcap caretaker whose mysterious Christmas gift leads them into a magical wintry world. Here, Madge will learn how to be braver than she ever thought possible. And that wishes can come true...

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Jeez, that's not a prequel. That's a giant fucking tease!

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

best way to spend christmas is with the doctor for sure. so looking forward to this.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

I just hope it's not as boring as last year's Christmas special. That one put me to sleep!

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

It took a second viewing of "A Christmas Carol" for me to really appreciate it. I'm really looking forward to this one.

:wtf:

I think you're in the minority on that one. Not only did I absolutely love "A Christmas Carol," I think it's hands down the best Doctor Who Christmas special.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

For me that honor goes to "The Runaway Bride." I thought it was a lot more fun.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

For all its silliness with flying-shark-drawn carriages, I really liked "A Christmas Carol".
"Doctor, I can't hear you! What is that? Is that singing?"

"It's a Christmas carol."

"A what?"

"A Christmas carol."

"A WHAT?"

"A CHRISTMAS CAROL."

Boom.
Just wonderful stuff all through that episode.

The fact that the spider queen never moves due to budgetary constraints pretty much ruins that ep for me.

Just think just DW has gone from unloved child of the Beeb to the loved one, and it's established its self as one of the most see programmes on Christmas Day.

That's often the case for me in many things, and that episode is no exception.

Samurai, another brilliantly begun review thread!!

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Looking forward to this, AND we get it Down Under on Monday, 10 hours after it airs in the UK. :D

I might even watch it the, uh, proper way. :)

Amen to that. I've had to work all weekend. Waiting for the Christmas Special is the one thing thats keeping me going.

And getting a new episode of Sherlock on New Years day is helping me cope with next weekend.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

well that was all very easy, enjoyable enough, the first 15 minutes were awesome, but it will never hold up to repeated viewing. Whilst the ending seems to suggest that the Doctor has a home, with Amy, Rory and River, does the Doctor need a home, and is it a good thing for him to have for the show in the long run? Also may we should have closed the door on the Doctor and Amy and moved on to the next companion next series.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

^ Um, where do you get the Doctor having a home with Amy and Rory from? He went there because Madge said *they* shouldn't be without him at Xmas...

Anyway...

That was OK - nice and light, Matt Smith being great... It did feel like a series' Xmas comedy lightweight filler though (the comedy foresters especially), rather than a proper story/adventure of that series in it's own right, if you see what I mean. A little too heavy on the "hey, look, this is Christmas and how Christmas is supposed be, because I'm telling you it's like this in our house" from the Moff. if you see what I mean.

Definitely fun though, and good that they didn't just follow the story of the Xmas-themed book this year again. Voyage of the Damned is still my fave Xmas special though. Highlight was the end scene though, with Amy and Rory. Damn, Amy is hot. Oh, how an Amy/River threesome would...

I'll be in my bunk.

7/10
