In a nutshell, yes!! It's really not that difficult a concept; the "Trek Prime" universe/timeline keeps going on its merry way, whilst the "nuTrek" universe/timeline, created from the divergence point of the USS Kelvin, goes off in a different direction. Personally, I like to think of nuTrek as akin to Marvel's Ultimate line, starting off with familiar characters/concepts/etc but forging new stories not burdened by the baggage brought on by years of continuity.
