The Detour

Has anyone else started watching The Detour on TBS?

I caught the first two episodes last night and I haven't laughed that hard at a television show in... well, pretty much forever. It's almost like it should have been titled National Lampoon's Vacation: The Television Series, only better written, more witty, and (arguably) less offensive than the original movie. Of course the storyline is way more than just a family vacation, but so far I think that's a pretty apt description of it.

Really hope it catches on and becomes as popular as it deserves! This is the type of comedy show I'd like to see more of.

I've enjoyed it a great deal so far. Though it lacks the nudity, I'd argue that in terms of sexual content it's actually much more raunchy than Vacation was. Which is not a bad thing, mind you, at least not for me. Vacation had a sort of innocence to it thanks to Clark's earnestness that's missing here. This can be pretty brutally straightforward in its handling of sexuality, parenting, marriage, balancing work and home, and the stereotypical perils one encounters on vacation.

But it's definitely been a fun ride in the first two episodes. I'm glad to see Samantha Bee having so much success on TBS, and it's good that her husband Jones is in on the act now too.

Yeah, that's why I said "arguably." They haven't really gone down the taboo rabbit hole as deep as Vacation did (such as implying incest, pedophilia, and things of that nature), but it's definitely a raunchy show, as you put it.

I really do hope it becomes as popular as it deserves. While crude and debased, it's still a pretty smart show from what I've seen of it so far.

Haven't got around to episode two, but it's good.

Samantha Bee is behind the Camera? Or just in the writers room?

So in theory these are heightened version of events Sam and Jason went through raising their own kids in not to recent history.

She's listed as co-creator (along with Jones), executive producer, writer, and she played Jones' mother in flashbacks (though it didn't show her face).

Yeah, the show is said to be based on their real life misadventures with family vacations.
