Anyone interested in seeing how BAD it really could have been for Nicolas Cage and Tim Burton's failed Superman project?

Instead of the bad "Superman Lives", we got the bad "Man of Steel".

What seems to have happened with Superman returns and "Man of steel" was they couldn't nail down what they wanted.

In the late 90's it was one weird idea after another.

In Look, Up in the Sky: The Amazing Story of Superman, Jon Peters admitted that the Superman franchise was problematic for him: "The elements that I was focusing on were away from the heart, it was more leaning towards Star Wars in a sense, you know. I didn't realize the human part of it, I didn't have that."

So WB tries a different more safe approach.

Superman Return- A homage to what people fondly remember. Crystal fortresses and bumbling Clark Kent to name a few things

The suit is an updated version of the classic suit

In the end the movie gets blindsided by the second "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie

"Superman Returns" makes money but WB wants more.

    OKAY.

    Attempt number 2

"Man of Steel" more realistic with elements that could have come from rejected 90's Superman movie ideas(Warring Krypton and a morally gray John Kent)

Cage looks like a drugged out heavy metal singer here. What a trainwreck!

Not before we suffered from the boring and bad Superman Returns of 2006.

Was that Cage's real hair or an attempt to do the post-death hairstyle from the comics that stuck around for a while?

Cage might have made a good Clark Kent, but I never could see him as a handsome Superman.

I'm even less interested about the documentary than I would've been about the film.

Given that we already have Kevin Smith's side of the story, what else could we possibly need to know how bad it could have been?

i wish this movie was made, it would have been so epic. After hearing Kevin Smiths anecdote in An evening with Kevin Smith, about what the producer wanted, and the fact Nic Cage was the star, this thing would have been legendary.

I think it's his real hair. He was making Con Air at the time, wasn't he?

Don't forget everyone is making judgments based on test photos. Cage would probably have had a haircut before filming started, the costumes and visual could have been changed, and even elements of the tone that Smith criticized might have been reworked. Remember that Burton received a lot of flack before the release of Batman '89 for his choice of actor, changes he made to Batman, the tone of the movie.

I remember being so excited when I found out that Kevin Smith was writing the screenplay and would still like to see a film based on his original story.

Though far from flawless, 'Batman' worked as well as it did because Burton's particualr combination of Gothic sensibilities and quasi-surrealism was a perfect fit for characters like Batman and the Joker in a setting like Gotham City.

    Superman...not so much.

Mind you, the masochist in me would be curious to hear what Danny Elfman would have come up with for the main theme...
