The convenience of Neelix to Seven...

Unimatrix 01

Lieutenant

I thought it was very "convenient" that in the beginning of S1 they just happened to find a helpless trash collector who could and wanted to serve as a "navigator" (Neelix) and could lead them through a chunk of the Delta Quadrant.

Then just as soon as he hits the point in space where he doesn't know of anything past, enter 7 of 9... A borg who knows a great deal on the space ahead and it's anomalies, and shield modifications, and nanoprobes to heal just about anything...

Don't get me wrong, I love both characters but...

Anyone else notice this?

I haven't thought about that before but maybe you have some points here. However, I think that it was more coincidental because I don't think they brought in Seven as some sort of "replacement" for Neelix when it comes to guiding them in the quadrant.

Sure, but it's a common trope that Voyager executes well enough that it's not a problem. And the two characters are dissimilar enough that it's not blatantly obvious and damaging to the story. Also since Neelix especially isn't a real person, his portrayal isn't problematic in the way that a similar Indian "guide" in North America or Celt "guide" in Roman Britain would be.

Ok but Neelix wasn't a very good guide at the start either.
Yeah, he knew what food to eat and how to trade but he didn't know much about certain regions of space or the culture/beings in them.

^ Yeah neelix was brilliant with food...which is why he nearly destroyed the ship with cheese...

I kind of felt like Seven was more a replacemnt for Kes - she came on as Kes was leaving.

It's not that much of a "forced coincidence" that they'd pick up two guides on their way home - I mean, picking up guides would be the logical thing to do, but it would only be a coincidence if one always handed over the responsibilities to the next smoothly. And this didn't happen: Neelix ran out of steam long before Seven came aboard, and OTOH didn't leave the ship when Seven arrived.

What does make me wonder is the fact that only a handful of people were ever picked up as guides. Neelix and Kes; Seven; why not others? They no doubt had a few temporary pilots to help them navigate through troubled space, but it would have been nice to see more guests aboard the ship for, say, a dozen episodes at a time.

Actually, we don't know that they didn't. Remember when they hid the telepaths? That was kind of out of left field as far as I was concerned, but the whole crew acted as if it were perfectly normal to be carrying "guests." I wonder (in universe) how many times they did that and since there was no danger in it, there was no story -- but they got navigational assistance and intelligence in exchange for a Warp 9 hitchhike.

Because nobody in the Delta Quad. wanted to be bothered, remember?;) Everywhere Voyager went, very few wanted to be their allies. We learned in "Code of Honor"(?) from the Coti that people in the DQ don't even help Borg refugees. When you've got Kazon, Vidiians, Krenium, Borg & Hirogen as your neighbors, I guess you learn to keep to your self. The DQ's the kind place where you go out to get the paper and you might not come back.

VOY could always have used the DS9 card and picked up the rebels, misfits and downtrodden of each hostile world...

Everywhere Voyager went, very few wanted to be their allies.

That was mainly in the early season due to the smear campaign the Kazon were doing. They wanted Voyager isolated so they would have an easier time taking the ship.

In later seasons they had an easier time finding space stations to stop at, etc. As to why they didn't pick up more folks I'd say that's budget. ;)

Actually they didn't need a guild after Seven & Harry got together.

Duh, we forgot Astrometrix.
Thanks to Harry & Seven, they had a new advanced way to chart space without needing a guide.

I keep forgetting Harry build half the new equipement they used along the way.
