The Chase & The Space Museum DVDs: March 1st

Just to warn any Region Oners: Steve Roberts at Gallifrey Base has said that the R1 release will have the Beatles clip edited out :(

Crap... does that mean Region 4 will have it removed too? Or just the NTSC countries...?

Don't quote me but I'm pretty sure the Region 4 (Australia) releases are the same as the Region 2 (UK) releases.

I think this is right, but am not absolutely certain. The good news is that my R2 copy says it's encoded for R4 as well, so if worst comes to the worst you can import that.

Need to pick up the DW tv movie at some point

If you hang on until later in the year, this is being rereleased alongside Talons and Androzani in the "Revisitations" Box set with all new extras.

The Doctor Who News Page reports that ONLY the Region 2 version will have the Beatles clip. All non-Europe versions -- which means Region 1 and Region 4 (I've never actually heard of anything ever being released in Region 3*) -- are being edited to remove the scene.

http://gallifreynewsbase.blogspot.com/2010/03/no-beatles-outside-europe.html

The news page is a bit ambiguous as to whether the entire scene might actually be cut (as in the complete time visualizer sequence).

This probably explains why, as best I can tell, no Region 1/4 release date for The Chase has been announced yet. (No release date's been announced for Space Museum either, which probably also suggests that we'll be getting the same box set with both stories, unlike the Peladon Tales set which for some reason is being released separately in Region 1 rather than in the box set the UK and I think Region 4 is getting).

I really am starting to hate lawyers and penny pinchers. They destroy so many good times it's not even funny. And I know for a fact the artists themselves rarely support this because I've heard, for example, Adam West bemoaning the fact they can't get their collective acts together to get Batman on DVD.

Of course the laugh is on them because that scene will be visible around the world via things like YouTube anyway.

The only person who might be happy is William "Mr. Jitterbug" Russell! ;)

I'm just happy the Beatles were such huge fans of The Prisoner that they signed over All You Need is Love in such a way that the use of that song in that show's finale episode has never been an issue.

* Region 3 is places like South Korea, though Japan is in Region 2 apparently. There's also a Region 5 which is much of Africa and the former USSR. Region 6 is China. Do these areas even get (official) Doctor Who DVD releases?

I'm with youy man. I can just imagine some fat-ass sitting behind a desk in LA or New York who after finding out the company couldn't get a half million royalty fee for a short clip, refused to give permission.

Douglas Adams was right on the money when he thought up the idea for a B Ark.

And yeah, poor Bill Russell. I can only imagine his face when that shot popped up on screen. :)

The next UK release is - Myths and Legends containing - The Time Monster (3rd Doctor), Underworld (4th Doctor) and The Horns of Nimon (4th Doctor) and should be released on Thursday, 3rd of June

What does that translate into for Region 1? And will "Nimon" be available by itself? (please say yes, please say yes!) :p

Sorry, I have no idea about the Region 1 releases. I only really keep track of Region 2 and 4 as Region 4 often follows the Region 2 releases. Region 1 is all over the place and doesn't seem as structured a Region 2 and 4.

I think it was just that ITC or whoever it was just saw the long terrm worldwide picture (making it in colour for a start) whereas as the BBC only had short term plans in mind. I dare say the music cost more at the time, but over time paid for itself.
