The Black List...worth watching?

I know the bare bones setup for this: mastermind criminal agrees to work for the authorities to catch other big criminals with the condition that a rookie agent be assigned to work with him.

James Spader is often good and the promos I've seen intrigue me to some degree to see what is going on with this show. I watch so very little television anymore, but maybe I could get into a new show.

So can anyone offer opinons (good or bad) on why this show works for them or not?

I love The Black List! Obviously James Spader's captivating character and performance are far and away the best thing about the show. The other characters are not nearly as interesting. But it's got a great conspiracy storyline interspaced with colorful and bizarre characters. The mystery of Red and the nature of his relationship with Elizabeth is a wonderful hook that keeps you watching. Spader is hilarious and moving and creepy and bizarre all at once. He tells these amazing non sequitur stories. It's also not afraid to have serialized stories and long lasting consequences.

What Mr Light said. Spader is the glue that holds this show together. The mystery of his past and his connection to Liz is worth sitting through some of the lesser interesting stories If you decide to check it out, watch from the beginning, either by DVDs or getting it through On Demand, so that you can see the shows in order.

I recommend it. I wouldn't say it's my favorite show on television, but it is worth watching. As mentioned, Spader is really great in this role. That alone is enough reason to watch, but the plots intrigue me as well. At first it may seem that this show is turning into a "catch the criminal of the week" procedural, but trust me, it moves beyond that. The show has a good mix of weekly bad guys and long-term stories. You may have to suspend disbelief at times, but it doesn't bill itself as the most realistic drama on TV anyway, so that's okay with me.

Oh, and Liz's hair gets better...after season 2 she stops wearing a wig!
