The Black Cauldron: 25th Anniversary DVD

I've always had a soft spot for this movie. I know it's not one of the great animated Disney films, but I also don't think it's the worst. I also know it's not very faithful to the books, but that doesn't take away my enjoyment of the film. I just look at it as a seperate entity loosely based on the books.

The 25th anniversary edition dvd recently came out and I have to say the picture and sound quality are much improved over previous versions. The extras are pretty slim though, with just a photo gallery, games and a deleted scene. The deleted scene is actually more of an alternative scene of the Fair Folk's introduction. It's unfinished animation in b&w with dialog. I was kind of hoping they would have included the 12 minutes of footage that was forced to be cut from the theatical release by Jeffery Katzenberg. After a test screening he felt it was too scary and violent for kids. Supposedly, some of that footage was not just "violent" scenes, but also plot points which would have helped storywise.

One of the animators has a 3-part blog up where he gives the long and troubled history of the making of the film. Interesting read. For those who want to check it out it's at:
