The Better Actor? #03

Star Trek is populated by such great supporting actors/actresses. In this battle we will compare two of Trek(s) most interesting bench players..

Marc Alaimo (Gul Dukat) vs John De lancy (Q)

Both these actors are really good at their craft, and when they want to, can chew scenery with the best of them.

Marc Alaimo. You could almost picture a mustasch and black cowboy hat on his head. He played the villian so well, and for awhile, the brawler who just wanted to save his planet, even if it meant selling his soul to the Dominion. I really did feel sorry for him when his daughter was killed. He really did care for her, and it probably cost him the Alpha Quadrant. Was he the evil Cardassian that the Bajorans made him out to be during the occupation? Or, was he just doing his job and not as sadistic as they claim. I dunno. It's hard to tell some times. He can't be ALL that bad. Anyone who could make Kai Winn burst into flames can't be all that bad. As for Alaimo? I think he steals almost every scene he is in from whoever is on the screen with him. And considering the actors/actresses around him, that ain't to shabby!!!

John De lancy. Yep, Q himself. There is something alluring about De lancy's acting style. He almost plays Q as if he is from outside the forth wall. Q could be sadistic, funny, depressed, and hungry, all in one episode. To Picard? Q reminds me of the fingernails scratching the chalk board. That is how I picture him with Picard. Janeway? At first its almost an extension of his relationship with Vash, but Janeway is a far more sophisticated woman. Q has never gone up against the most explosive force in the universe..a woman. De lancy always seems to have that little gleem in his eye, as if he is in on the joke with us, as if he knows we are watching this like its some kind of...play. Why they never used him in a TNG movie escapes me.

Who is the better actor?
Marc Alaimo or John De lancy

Well Mark Alaimo had much more screen time to show off.
This is a hard one. I like both of them and I'm going to have to vote for Mark just because he killed Winn.

Marc Alaimo, cause he got a much more interesting character to play (until S6 at least).

John Delancy seems to play every roll the same way with the same expressions and inflections. He's not very versatile.

Marc Alaimo, easily. He had a lot more to work with than DeLancie, and while I liked Q, he was a very one-dimensional character.

Marc Alaimo. His character was far more complex than Q, who was a fairly one-note character.

Marc Alaimo.

Q likes to talk up an illusion of depth to himself, but really it's all hot air. He has no real depth. His alleged depth that he attributes to himself never manifests itself. Q is the exact same one-dimensional needy whiney, pathetic guy in every episode he appears in.

Dukat however, had all kinds of variation up until the writers sabotaged the character, over Alaimo's vehement objections (definitely can't blame Alaimo for that, the blame lays squarely on the writers.).

If you mean Gul Macet, he actually showed up first. Macet was the first Cardassian in Trek and was also played by Alaimo.

I love the Q character and thought that De Lancie did a great job with him. I would have loved him to have more screen time so that he could develop the character more.

I think Alaimo did a very good job with Dukat and I liked that he did the heel/face turn a round for a while.

I would have to say I liked De Lancie better, only because if given more screen time I think he would have developed a lot more instead of being the one dimensional character he seems to be classified here as.
