The Best of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine DVD

So with Star Trek 2009 having been a success CBS has been releasing small volumes of episodes calling them "The Best of Star Trek" and "The Best of Star Trek: The Next Generation". It has already been said that there are no plans on the table for a "The Best of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" DVD so here's my question:

CBS has changed their minds and are going to release the DVD. They contact you and ask you which four episodes of DS9 are the best in the series. They can be from any season, but you can only pick four total.

Which four episodes do you choose?

(This is hypothetical only)

Kinda hard because episodes are interconnected and four really isn't enough to get the gist of the series. If I were to chose though:

The Visitor - Hit's close to home for many people
Trials and Tribble-ations - Brings in some original flavor for the 90s.
The Emissary - Set's up the show and builds intregue if people want to continue on.
You are Cordially Invited - Not much really for the series, but Worf get's married and it's quirky fun.

I disagree with "You Are Cordinally Invited". It is not one of the best, and it spoils things from the later seasons (Worf & Dax). Besides, you already have T&T and you don't really need 2 light-hearted episodes.

DS9 really does not lend itself to those Best of DVDs, since it has long storyarcs. You cannot possibly put something like "In the Pale Moonlight" without people knowing about the Dominion war.

Focusing only on the episodes that would not spoil the storylines, while being easy to understand without the context of the other episodes:

"Duet" - it is definitely one of the best, it gives you a good idea what DS9 is about, and it is self-contained - all the context there is (Bajor, Cardassia, occupation) can be understood from the episode itself
"Necessary Evil" - see above, and I think it also can stand quite well on its own and doesn't spoil too much
"The Visitor"
"Trials and Tribble-ations" - to see DS9's lighter side, and it would also be easier for non-Niners to get into, esp. those who are already Trek fans

Anything related to the Dominion war or the Maquis would not work due to it being a part of longer storyarcs, it would lack context and spoil too much of the series.

edit: Another possibility: "The Wire" instead of "Necessary Evil".

I'd have to put the 4 episodes as:

The Visitor
Trials and Tribble-ations
Far Beyond The Stars
The Wire

While I guess a claim could also be made for 'Duet', 'The Jemhadar','In The Pale Moonlight', etc. I wouldn't want to use up half a disc for a double episode, and all the episodes above are basically stand-alone stories and don't reveal the major Dominion arc really at all which is something I feel would need to be understood to get the full effect of some of the later episodes.

Duet
Empok Nor
Trials and Tribble-ations
In the Pale Moonlight
Don't you think "Empok Nor" would be a strange episode to get introduced to Garak with? :cardie:
I'd rather pick "The Wire" (could be a a reserve pick - if you don't want two Occupation-related episodes, although that would be OK with me, substitute "Necessary Evil" with "The Wire").

Another reserve pick: "The House of Quark", as the best Quark/Ferengi episode, would work as the comedy choice, if "Trials and Tribble-ations" were unavilable for some reason.

Always thought Empok Nor was a very good stand alone that has a very creepy vibe. The whole point of these discs are to get people to sample the series in question. So I went with the four episodes that I thought did it best...

You need a Garak episode, a serious episode, an emotional episode and a fun episode.

The Wire
In The Pale Moonlight
The Visitor
Trials and Tribble-ations

As long as it includes Second Skin I'll be happy.
The only way it could work properly and have the emotional resonance would be if the viewer has been already properly introduced to the Bajor/Cardassia history, to Kira and her history, and to Garak. Which would take up at least 2 or 3 other episodes on the disc, and then you'll have the entire disc comprised of heavy Bajor-Cardassia/Kira/Garak episodes.

And "In the Pale Moonlight"? You'd have to know about the Dominion war and its context, and to know and care about Sisko, if the episode is to have the right resonance. Plus it spoils too many things.

^ "Far Beyond the Stars" is great after you're familiar with the show, but to someone who is not, it does not give the right idea what the show is all about, at all.

Plus, all the fun of seeing the actors out of makeup or comparing the characters in Benny's life to DS9 is lost when you're unfamiliar with the characters and actors in the first place.

The Wire - a great standalone episode about Garak.
Nor the Battle to the Strong -serious standalone episode and doesn't spoil too many things (like Dominion War).
Duet- huge emotional impact and Bajoran episode.
Trials and Tribbleations- best light-hearted episode, and good for those who had seen TOS but not DS9.

I was thinking about including Nor the Battle to the Strong instead of The Visitor, because I like it better, but I couldn't remember if it spoils anything important. I can barely remember how many references there are to the war and political situation, apart from the fact that there are Klingon attacks (and should this be considered a spoiler...?).

1. "Necessary Evil". I'm assuming that you probably can't have both this one AND "Duet", as that would give the newbie viewers the idea that this show was all about the Occupation. "Necessary Evil" gets the nod as being a main cast focused episode, which all other things being equal is a good thing in a disk like this.

2. "The Siege of AR-558". Unlike some posters above, I don't see the need to avoid the Dominion War entirely, as long as you aren't getting too deep into the weeds of the plot. "The Siege of AR-558" is easy to understand and doesn't really "give away" much that would "ruin" the series for anyone. I think also that at least episode on this DVD with some phasers and explosions is a good thing. (It probably also wouldn't hurt that this is the DS9 episode closest in tone to 21st Century sci-fi like The Dark Knight and nuBSG.)

3. "The Visitor". Being guest-actor focused is probably a strike against it for a starter DVD, but it is just too good and too accessible to be left out.

4. "Hard Time". Why not an O'Brien episode? One of the best acted shows in DS9's run.

You make a good point... Can we really have a DS9 'best of' without the war in it? It is, after all, one of its distinguishing characteristics. "The Siege of AR-558" is the most suitable for an introductory disc out of the Dominion war arc, but I couldn't remember if it spoils much or not... I will rely on your opinion that it doesn't.

So - my revised list - taking into account the versatility, which characters feature heavily in it, whether it is a good introduction to characters/plots etc.:
(man, I am thinking too much about this :rommie:
You think that someone is reading this and taking suggestions from us? :guffaw: )

"Duet" - first of all, it is so great would just be wrong not to put it; and it is standalone, while it also gives a good introduction to Bajor/Cardassia/occupation
"The Visitor" - accessible emotional SF story, standalone, also introduces the Ben/Jake father/son relationship which is a big part of the show
"The Siege of AR-551" - the most accessible episode from the Dominion war, and one of the best, doesn't require too much knowledge about the context of the war; and you have to have an episode with a bit more action
"Trials and Tribble-ations" - best comedy episode, very accessible, and works particularly well for non-Niner Trek fans and people familiar with TOS and its characters; also has the advantage that it introduces a bunch of characters well - Dax, Bashir, O'Brien and even Worf are at their comedic best, Odo and Sisko are also heavily featured. This way you have most of the show's main characters introduced quite well, since "Duet" is a great Kira episode, "The Visitor" is Jake-centric, and "The Siege" has some great Quark moments (and Nog and Sisko, of course).

Let's say there was a follow-up disc for DS9, "The Best of DS9 II":

"Necessary Evil" - an awesome noirish Occupation episode; also gives a good introduction to Odo, Kira, Quark and Dukat
"The Wire" - an interesting episode that keeps you guessing, and an excellent introduction to Garak, but still keeps him mysterious enough
"Nor the Battle to the Strong" - because it is great, more or less standalone, it doesn't spoil much, and it is is focused on a war - even if it is not *the* war
"The House of Quark" - one of the best comedy episodes, best Quark episode, a good Klingon episode as well; the only thing that would be "wrong" about it is that it would give the first time viewers the idea that all Ferengi or Klingon episodes are that good... but that's good, because it might make new fans more willing to tolerate the Ferengis early on
(alternative: "Little Green Men", another funny Ferengi episode)

Great episodes that I would not put on the Best of disc:
"The Maquis" - two-parter, would take up too much space on the disc
"Second Skin" - wouldn't have the same emotional resonance without knowing the characters and the context already
"In the Pale Moonlight" - same thing as "Second Skin", plus it would spoil too many things
Anything else related to the Dominion, the Maquis, Section 31, Bashir being genetically engineered, etc. - anything that has too many spoilers, and needs context
"Far Beyond the Stars" - doesn't give an idea what the show is about, and loses some of the fun when you don't know the actors/their usual characters already

I'm glad someone picked "You Are Cordially Invited...". It's one of my favourites too and I don't think it should just be dismissed as a throwaway lighthearted episode. I found it to be one of the most uplifting and thoughtfully written episodes. I love the way it analyzes the Worf/Dax relationship and how they are a perfect example of the way opposites can attract.

I also appreciated how it gives all the characters something fun to do, playing off the affection we've built up for them over the seasons before. It's a nice demonstration for the endearing comedic sides of all of them, with some seriousness between Worf and Jadzia to give it some emotional resonance.

My picks for the four best episodes are not limited to my favourites...my top 4 favourites are the same except "The Visitor" would be replaced with "His Way".

"Trials and Tribble-Ations"
"The Visitor"
"You Are Cordially Invited..."
"To the Death"

I bet most fans would vote for "Duet" and "In the Pale Moonlight" over my last two choices, but aside from the fact that I have problems with both (although overall I like the latter very much), I think they aren't as good choices because they don't really show off the whole cast. "Duet" is mostly a story between Kira and the imprisoned Cardassian, and "In the Pale Moonlight" is mostly a Sisko and Garak story.

I think my picks are better as ensemble pieces and showcases for the charming and interesting personalities of the whole cast, aside from "The Visitor" because it is the most emotionally powerful episode, on the same level as TNG's "The Measure of A Man", "The Offspring", and "The Inner Light".

There was only one reason why I picked You are Cordially Invited. It pretty much was the start of the end of Worf's story, and I'm thinking a lot of people who buy these sets might be familiar with him and TNG.
