The Australian Election Thread

Australis

Writer - Australis
Admiral
So, 21st August. Thought I'd put this here for observations, thoughts and news.

Initial thoughts.

One, Australis's Law of Elections - The winners don't win, actually the losers lose. That is, the antics/flaws of the losing party are greater than the other's.

Two, I REALLY don't want the Libs to win. They are just bad, bad, bad news.

ETA: While I admire the principles of the Greens, Bob Brown just gets on my tits, pious, mournful crackpot that he is.

It is a pity that the Democrats self-destructed, if they hadn't we would have had someone to vote for.

I know who I'll be voting for. How other Australians will vote ... I don't know.

Just saw the first labour ad.

Re: Thje Australian Election Thread

I'm not really into australian politics, but I have gotten a good impression of that red headed new PM. How are the oddses that she stays in office?

Re: Thje Australian Election Thread

I don't know. From where I sit, and my view, she's looking good. However things are in flux, the electorate is shifty, there's a distinct possibiity that marginal seats will fall the wrong way, and both leaders will have to move hard and fast while being seen to be sticking to the rules, I don't think voters want a dirty campaign.

Anyone else have a view?

I'm all for informality on the internets and in politics, but given the subject of the thread I must respectfully point out that the word 'the' does not contain a 'j'. ;)

Oh, and: RAAAAANGA! :techman:

^ Maybe it's "Central Coast way" thing. *Ducks*

Also The Chaser Boys should return this week.

Of course it is! I'm on thje Coast, near the fjords, where lots of people are called Bjorn, and the prickles are all called thjorns :D

If a mod can edit the title, I'd be pleased.

You may want to block your ears for the next few years, because Bob and comrades are odds on to hold the balance of power in the senate thanks to Joooolya's furious dog whistling in the past few weeks, and the libs are even money in the house I reckon.

If we get a rate rise during the campaign, Abbott wins.

If we get another death from dodgy roof insulation, Abbott wins.

If we get another hapless boat full of refugees, Abbott wins.

No wonder the ALP is racing to the polls, even though Gillard has had a disastrous fortnight, and looks well out of her depth.

I guess it's Abbott's to lose. Will he be able to convince the mortgage belt that he won't start messing around with IR? Can he keep his foot out of his mouth for a whole month?

As usual, the apathetic, the uninformed and the disengaged who turn up only to avoid a fine will decide the whole show.

Anything could happen.

Re: Thje Australian Election Thread

The Senate 'balance of power' thing annoys me, in that minor, one issue parties get to say what happens, and they don't really have a thought out plan, let alone a policy, on specific issues outside what they think of as their remit.

ABC's 'Insiders' has some good info on what's happening without as much spin as the commercial media, and the Chasers are back on Wednesday with 'Yes We Canberra!' which will deflate the pollies even further (though I'm not a fan of 'the boys').

Re: Thje Australian Election Thread

I am the opposite. I prefer for the Greens/Independents to have the balance of power because they at least don't just refuse to support something just because the other party suggests it.

Besides, two of the five Green senators are Tasmanians which benefits my state. The other 3 Green senators come from the next 2 smallest, in terms of population, states. South Australia also has Nick Xenophon as an independent. I think the Greens holding the balance of power stops the smaller states being screwed over.

Re: Thje Australian Election Thread

And the states with the larger populations just have to go along, and appease the needs of the smaller states?

I see your point, hope you can see mine.

Re: Thje Australian Election Thread

The larger states have more control in the House of Representatives, the smaller states in the Senate but only when our Green or Independent members have the balance of power.

Re: Thje Australian Election Thread

1st poll of the campaign :

2PP 50/50
Lib/Nat 44 - ALP 38
Pref. PM : JG 55 - TA 35

Re: Thje Australian Election Thread

Media says Julia Gillard will be in Townsville today, while Tony Abbott shall be in Melbourne.

Also glad I changed my address over a year ago.
