What was the deal with the Synth ships in some of the later trailers having extremely prominent Starfleet symbols, and then in the aired episodes not? Was the idea that the Synths would be acting on behalf of Starfleet, in an official capacity and with authorized equipment, only overstepping their mandate a bit? Or that they would be flying a false flag?
Might be there is no mystery about this in-universe: perhaps there was a misunderstanding or programming glitch that made the Synths attack Mars in good faith, thinking they were performing their Starfleet duty, and the truly guilty have already been given due therapy?

We learn of a construction ban. We do not learn of any sort of reprisal against existing Synths. Do they have a secret hideout that actually remains secret? Were all destroyed at Mars, and every single corpse accounted for? Is Daystrom hiding them in the basement?

The ships were Mars's own drone defense ships (briefly seen in BOBW part 2), which were hacked by "rogue synths"

Of course they were.
1. Nothing was ever stated that the kite ships were Mars defense ships (which are a completely different design to those seen in BoBW).
2. The kite ships were made from parts of the DSC Section 31 drone ship CGI model. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are S31 ships, though.
I think she was a different and more advanced kind of synth than the F8 versions.

Now I'm inferring that the ships we see (part of the Mars Planetary Defense net) were linked to the Mars Defense Perimeter, different versions of the ones saw briefly - ones that the script said were unmanned - and that fits in what we've seen on screen so far.

Now I'm inferring that the ships we see (part of the Mars Planetary Defense net) were linked to the Mars Defense Perimeter, different versions of the ones saw briefly - ones that the script said were unmanned - and that fits in what we've seen on screen so far.
And quite possibly the footage of the killer sats turning towards Mars will be followed by the sight of the sats deploying these kiteships or something, when the show gets there.
No doubt. But what is the reputation of the Synths in general? Horrible burners of Mars, obviously. But are they former loyal slaves who backstabbed the Federation? Or former variably-faithful companions and equals, the weird uncles of humanoidkind? Or a former utterly separatist species who just didn't do anything hostile before the Mars raid? "Remembrance" doesn't tell yet. But Dahj seems to quote a general reputation of sorts, of Synths being fake and unreal and irrelevant. Pre- or post-Mars sentiments?

Supposedly, the second or third episode reveals there's a conspiracy theory suggesting the Synths were being influenced by the Tal Shiar, though Picard dismisses this finding it hard to believe even the Tal Shiar could do something to screw over the Romulan people.
How many Synths are/were there anyway? Eight? Or a million? Picard himself needed an infodump from Daystrom to get up to speed on Synths. Perhaps they never were commonplace, which is why they are not well known. "Rogue Synths" need not ring any bells, any more than "Taliban" need mean anything to the newsfeed audiences initially. The infamy would come first, and awareness only later.
On the other hand, the conversation with Jurati touched upon a range of android types, of which the Synths that attacked Mars are just one subcategory, and folks like Data seem to be a step above those Synths again, with folks like Data but made of flesh and blood the highest step imaginable and indeed so far imaginary, as far as Daystrom is concerned. So is there also a common type of Synth? Common enough to require the adoption of the one-syllable nickname in place of the two-syllable Android?

Romulan involvement is also hinted at in the prequel comic.
Well, technically speaking, the ones seen in BoBW were destroyed. Maybe they were replaced with a newer, more robust model (the kite ship).
