The Art of Costume Design

On the studio lot at Paramount, it's simply called WARDROBE...
but I can tell you: the costumers with whom I worked on ENTERPRISE
were artists of the highest calibre... professional and incredibly talented!!!

I put together a slideshow of the costume I wore as B'Rat Ud
on Star Trek: ENTERPRISE... I hope you'll enjoy the photos.

I recently discovered that B'Rat's costume was put up for sale in 2007.
Ah...if only i had known. Anyway, while surfing around the internet,

STAR TREK: ENT “B'RAT UD, V’RADIAN CHEMIST – RAJIIN” COSTUME “B'Rat Ud” (Dell Yount) was a V’radian chemist who owned a shop on the Xanthan floating bazaar. He was visited by “Captain Archer” (Scott Bakula) in the Star Trek: Enterprise episode “Rajiin” after Archer learned that B’Rat had a formula for synthesizing Trillium-D. B’Rat willingly exchanged the formula for the rare and coveted (according to him) ship’s galley spices including black pepper, mustard seed and paprika. The costume includes a green shirt with multicolored metallic pinstripes and a chiffon orange and red layer with ruffles attached over the top. The pants are brown and green flecked velvet with pleats up the sides. There is a small tear in the back of the right leg. An amazing earth tone colored coat made of bunched and ruffled velvet with brown leather trim around the shoulders, cuffs and in strips up the front and back. An impressive harness is worn over the top made of randomly shaped pieces of brown leather that is held together with leather lace, metal rings and rivets. Costume comes complete with costume tag.

Are there costumes in any of the Star Treks that you feel rise to the level of Art?

Actually, the Starfleet uniforms themselves are of course always interesting, as they represent the look and feel of the 'heroes'. I think all of the Starfleet uniform designs have their merits. Special mention to T'Pol and Seven's outfits of course

But seriously again. Of course, all costumers who design and create these things are artists in their own right. Working under tight budgets and deadlines, having to create alien clothes, that's not just a regular job.
