Hubby and I don't exchange gifts at Christmas; we instead buy something for the house, something we will both use, or just save up for something later. We buy presents for all the family & friends, but for each other. We save that for birthdays and Valentines' Day. Our parents are the hardest to buy for--my Dad, who hates everything, and his Mom, who also doesn't seem to like much. I've gotten pretty good at picking out the few things that WILL make the mother-in-law happy (I know what colors, what things in general) but my Dad hates everything he gets and will tell you so. But he's always cold now, and he tends to ruin all his clothes (he has Alzheimers) so everyone is getting him warm clothing--sweaters, long johns, etc. It takes some work, but I can usually dig out what people need or want. Most people are just happy to be remembered.
Hubby gave a great gift to his cousin this year. The man was in town with his new wife and baby, and they had to fly back (a long flight) after only a short visit, with the cranky 1 year old. So he baked a big batch of brownies for them to eat in the hotel and airport and they LOVED it. It kept the baby happy and the parents at least got to eat something before they got on the plane.
