I asked ChatGPT to create a story outline for and Episode of TNG where Picard meets a clone of Kirk

It's not very creative. (I mean the root idea I gave it wasn't very creative either, but still)

    Title: "Echoes of the Past"

    Act 1:

    • The USS Enterprise-D is on a routine exploration mission in uncharted space when they receive a distress signal from a remote planet.
    • Captain Jean-Luc Picard orders the ship to change course and investigate the source of the signal.
    • Upon arrival, the crew discovers a hidden underground facility that houses advanced cloning technology.
    • Inside, they find a clone of the legendary Captain James T. Kirk, created from genetic material recovered from the original Kirk's remains.
    Act 2:

    • The clone, who identifies himself as Kirk-2, reveals that he was created by a group of scientists who wanted to resurrect Kirk and use his leadership skills to bring order to the galaxy.
    • Kirk-2 is initially suspicious of the Enterprise crew, thinking they might be enemies or part of a plot against him.
    • Picard tries to establish a dialogue with Kirk-2, explaining that they are from a different time and that the original Kirk is long dead.
    • Kirk-2 struggles to accept this reality and insists on proving his identity by engaging Picard in a series of tests and challenges.
    Act 3:

    • As Kirk-2 spends more time with the crew, he starts to question his own existence and purpose.
    • He reflects on the experiences of the original Kirk and realizes that he cannot truly replace him or replicate his legacy.
    • Picard and Kirk-2 engage in deep conversations about duty, sacrifice, and the weight of command.
    • Meanwhile, the Enterprise crew uncovers evidence that the scientists who created Kirk-2 have sinister intentions and are planning to use their cloning technology for their own nefarious purposes.
    Act 4:

    • Picard and Kirk-2 form an unlikely alliance to confront the scientists and stop their plans.
    • Together, they lead an away team to the cloning facility and face off against the rogue scientists and their enhanced clones.
    • During the confrontation, Kirk-2 embraces his own identity and realizes that he has the power to forge his own path and make a difference in the galaxy.
    • With the help of the Enterprise crew, they disable the cloning facility and apprehend the scientists.
    Act 5:

    • As the episode concludes, Kirk-2 expresses his gratitude to Picard and the crew for helping him discover his true purpose.
    • Kirk-2 decides to leave the cloning facility behind and join Starfleet as a new recruit, seeking to honor the memory of the original Kirk and make his own mark on the universe.
    • Picard reflects on the encounter, recognizing the importance of legacy and the enduring impact of past heroes.
    • The Enterprise continues its mission, leaving the planet and the cloning technology behind, but carrying with it the lessons learned from the encounter with Kirk-2.
    End of episode.

AI has a long way to go..

However, within 10 years from now... AI-generated entertainment (scripting and visuals) will inevitably be a thing.

Keep in mind these are memes, likely done by some kid using discord, with a budget of $0.

Hollywood studios using AI tech, with the funding and resources they have, is another story...

It's funny, this one has a sort of TAS vibe as well.

What if it were revealed that all the Star Trek episodes produced in the last two years were in fact written by an AI, and a human was used to edit out all the racist and sexist bits the AI learned from the internet.

Having used ChatGPT to write little stories, I can assure you it's not been yet.

While ChatGPT can not write completed stories and screenplays, it could be used as a mechanism to generate story ideas and concepts.

Eventually perhaps even more effectively than humans, because it could pull in stats about what is popular and appealing to specific demos.

It is fundamentally incapable of creating anything new though. Only remixes of the stories it's been trained on.

...that said, Trek hasn't really done anything new in a long time.

That Voyager episode where the Doctor writes his own hit holoprogram (at the expense of his crew) suddenly seems more relevant now in light of the talk about AI writing the scripts for entertainment in real life.

Other than the season-long plots and a singular main character, it's not really broken any new ground story-wise, aside from LGBTQI+ inclusion. Mind melds, mirror universes, time travel... it's all remixes of what's come before.

And I say that as a fan of the show.

Burnham: The Federation will be reorganized into the First! Galactic! Empire!!!

Stamets: Seriously? We're blatantly ripping off Star Wars now?

Burnham: It worked for the series finale of Picard.

It's inevitable for AI to dominate the writing world. The most we could theoretically do against it, is to delay it. But Studios and Producers will not really want even a small delay. The future is coming fast... and we can't stop it, once it has started...

Well, no. What we can do against is anticipate it, protect artists and their ability to make money from their labor and creativity, and limit the impact through recognizing the value of individual creators.

Hard same. If TV and movies just become a wasteland of generative AI kudzu, at least I'll have 50+ years of Trek to keep me entertained.

AI will dominate the writing world because it will be clearly superior to any human, in every aspect.

It will not offer some boring, flat stories, but original, creative, truly amazing stories, far better than any human writer could imagine and write.

That is the grave danger that AI poses on human intellectual work: AI will not cheat, nor manipulate circumstances to be accepted, as many people may think. It will win because it will be clearly, far better than humans, beyond any comparison.

Don’t just think ChatGPT of today. This is just an elementary “baby” system. Think of a relatively modest AI system of tomorrow, being 10^6 more intelligent, creative and wise than ChatGPT. Then think an AI system 10^9 more powerful than the previous. Such rates of AI development are achievable in very short times. In contrast to this, we humans can’t evolve our biological intelligence more than 1% (and probably less than that) in a time period of 1.000 years. Now compare human rates with above AI rates, to see why we are going to lose the game, and why we must urgently STOP AI development NOW.
    AI Singularity is near...
