The 2008 N.Y. Met Thread

The start of the season is almost upon us as we enter the 4th day of March and its gonna be a great year. Sure El Duque got a hangnail or a sore throat and really can`t pitch but Mike Pelfrey is doing great so far. Fernando Martinez is also having a good spring (Haha Twins) and I can`t wait till we open the season in Shea Stadium south (Dolphins stadium for those who don`t know.)

Its gonna be so much fun watching this crew crush the Phillies and the Braves this year, and before anybody starts the Phillies didn`t win the division last year. We lost it.

I can`t wait to the Mets vs Red Sox in the W.S. as I`m gonna love seeing Bill Buckner replays over and over again.

The Phillies won the last six straight games against the Mets. That's winning it as much as anything (pretty much every year since 2000 or 2001, the Phillies have collapsed in the stretch, losing the wild card to the Marlins or the Division to the Braves. I give those teams credit for winning it, even if my tortured "woe is me" instinct would be happy to believe the Phillies are solely responsible for not making the playoffs. The truth is, another team has to win it, no matter how bad a team does).

This season should be fun. I'm going to predict that the Phillies will have a shitty April and then start winning to make it close again. Usually I predict the Phils will collapse in September, but, last year, I had so much fun making outlandish predictions I didn't expect to become true. The only thing was, they did. :D

This is going to be a fun season. You can go ahead and predict that the Mets are the team to beat in the NL East this season, but we have two MVPs who might disagree with that.

EDIT: BTW, I want to say that I'm glad there is a Mets fan on the board (although, iirc, there's a plague of you people here ;) ). Don't take my trash talking the wrong way. I mean it in the most friendly way possible, since I enjoy rivalries. I wish there were more Cowboy fans here, for example, since I place the Eagles-Cowboys rivalry above all others. I don't suppose you're a Giants fan?

EDIT Again: I hope the Red Sox don't win the AL again, that would be annoying as hell. I used to sympathize with them when I equated their losing with my team's losing. BoSox fans are cool when they loyally follow teams that always fall short. When they follow a team that wins all the time, they become as arrogant as Yankees fans.

Ryan Howard is gonna set a new single season strike out record this year to go along with his arbitration win and as a Philly hater, I find it funny that Cole Hamels is not gonna pitch opening day.

EDIT: No I`m a Jet fan first and foremost, but I do love the fact that the Giants crushed so many spirits last year. First the Cowboys, then New England`s perfection and now Brett Farve. Of course if Randy Moss signed with GB this year, Farve would still be throwing INTs for another 3 years. Every Vikings fan should rock their Randy Moss jerseys today

I missed this about Cole not pitching opening day. Does this have to do with the contract thing, or something else? Since the Phils usually lose opening day anyway, maybe it's a good thing if he doesn't pitch (save him for a win ;) ).

They have Brett Meyers pitching. I don`t know why though

^ Uh, have you been huffing the jet fumes as they fly over Shea DP? (And yes, I'm a big Mets fan)

I think the Mets should be considered the favorites going into the season but they're not a lock for anything. After Santana I'm not convinced about any of their rotation. Pedro is an unknown, El Duque will miss time, Pelfrey wasn't major league material last year, and I want to see another good year from Maine and Perez before I got on board with them.

Delgado is coming off a broken wrist and now has hip problems. Beltran hasn't played yet. Ryan Church's bat is suspect. Alou is good for a stint or 2 on the DL.

If everything rolls their way I think they can win the division by several games but could easily see them ending up 3rd.

Actually, that makes sense. Brett has been a starter for many years. We just signed someone else who could be a later reliever/closer (can't recall his name at the moment) and we have Flash Gordon until he gets injured again.

I wonder how the Mets will bounce back from choking last season away. It will be a very interesting year.

Ain't it sad when you need to go back 22 years to remember your team's success? On the plus side, I need only remember back to September for the Mets' latest monumental collapse. The best part of it was how mouthy Mets fans were on the board. Re-reading all those quotes when they finally were eliminated kept me laughing for days.

On another note, we're not going to have a thread for every single team, are we?

I should hope not. Right now, it's a convenient place to discuss baseball in general while trashtalking with Mets fans, though.

Cocky quotes in mid-September, denial posts in late September, or misery posts in October?

Last year sucked to be a Mets fan. But honestly the playoff loss in 2006 to the Cards hurts a lot worse to me. To be THAT close to the Series and not make it after being dominant all year sucked ass.

The cocky quotes about how they were cruising to the Series and the Phillies never had a prayer (one in particular about how easily their pitching was going to wipe the Phils in a series before getting swept). Smoothie, you and donkey don't make such statements, so you're exempted from my comments.

Last year was fun. There were a couple of times where I, expecting the Phillies to lose, jokingly mentioned that we had a shot if we swept the Mets in our last meetings with them and then won the division. Of course, I didn't think it had a snowball's chance in hell of succeeding (actually, even when the Phillies won the division, I didn't believe it. They re-broadcasted the last game of the season the next day and I half expected to see them lose it after all :D)

That playoff lost to the Cards sure hurt (Carlos Beltran still has nightmares of Wainwright curves) but this team losing the division hurt more. Its a good thing it won`t happen this year.

I can see why you would be worried about Perez but their is no way anybody should be worried about Big Game Maine. Maine pitched the best game of his life last Sept long after everybody said he was out of gas and back then the Marlins had a good hitting team and the best hitting pitcher in the league. As for Pedro, all he needs is a little Mangu and hes fine. Pelf has been tearing it up during spring training and I can see him having a good year in the 5 hole

On another note, we're not going to have a thread for every single team, are we?

I`ve noticed that this board mostly has Red Sox, Yankee and Met fans. Theirs a couple of Phillies fans gathered here and there but there is no way you will see a thread for every single team. But if there are enough people interested in making a season thread for the Rockies, DBacks, Red Sox or Indians, I say more power to them

Last year was a classic Mets Season, all the potential, and no results. What bugged me is that they didn't seem to have any heart.

As a Met fan, I couldn't care less if they came in 4th, as long as they really play like they love it.

That being said, Mets are gonna kick ass. Perez and Maine have big years ahead of them. Hernandez is a GREAT spot starter, Pedro is a kickin #2 starter, and Santana dominated the hardest hitting division in baseball last year, so he is gonna cruise all over the NL East.

As to the phillies winning the division last year, yeah they won it.
They made the Mets their pony and rode them hard last year. All year. The only satisfaction i can find is that after they won the division... Kaz MAtsui made the phillies his pony. And that my friends and foes, is hillllllllarious.

Yeah seriously. I used to joke with people about how they'd sign a big name who'd come to Shea and do nothing, and the mediocre prospect they traded away would go on to an all-star career. Think about every big name they brought in and every prospect they dealt in the 90s- early 00s.

Kaz pissed me off. Why the hell couldn't he do that in Queens!

John Maine had a great outing yesterday against Houston but today is gonna be a big day. Johan Santana is gonna pitch against the World Champion Red Sox and today also marks the return of Carlos Beltran and Delgado to the lineup.
