That's not how a boycot works, peopel...

Thanks to the internet, the word "boycott" no longer conveys an element of gravitas. In fact, we're pretty certain that this collection of 1080 (and counting) Sonic fans doesn't actually understand the point of a boycott. The petitioners are upset about Sonic the Hedgehog 4, knowing full well from the leaked footage that it will "simply not be anywhere near as good as the original Sonic games." They're not going to stand for this and have threatened to hurt Sega where it hurts the most: sales. "We will not buy it," the petition explains. "We will in fact buy Sonic 1 on release in protest of Sonic 4."

Take that, Sega! Instead of giving you money, these people are going to ... give you money? Ha! Lesson learned.

:wtf:

Yeeeeeeah, great boycot guys...

The actual petition doesn't mention the word "boycott" once. Joystiq are fannies.

Oh, don't get me wrong, the people behind this petition are... silly, to say the least. They're operating under a bizarre notion that mass-buying Sonic 1 will encourage Sega to make a new Sonic game that's... just... like... Sonic 1. Or something.

Their motivations are a retarded mystery and they're a typical example of the nonsense "they changed it now it sucks/game devs can't do anything right" attitude that plagues gaming fandom nowadays, but it seems a tad harsh to decry them for misapplying the word "boycott" when they didn't even use it. ;)

I had a peek at the leaked footage and while I was expecting more in the Mega Man 9 vein of a Sonic game that looks like it was made in the early-90s, it still invokes that classic Sonic gameplay to me. I'm still interested.

$10 says none of those people actually buy Sonic 1. $50 says 25% of the people that sign that petition will buy Sonic 4 in the first month. People on the internet are not only stupid, but they are lazy. Their demand for self-indulgence vastly exceeds their righteous indignation.
