That time when Star Trek fans invaded the SkyDome

What was this? Well, back in 1994, the final episode of Star Trek TNG was shown at SkyDome in Toronto, and I was there along with half of the city (or so it seemed) to see this. The event was covered on 'The Federation Station' CITYTV (back when it was an independent station and not a vassal of Rogers Communications.)

For those that don't know about this who aren't from Toronto, here's some video:

Some fans dressed up as Ferengi at the SkyDome event:

This is all due to an article in today's edition of BlogTO talking about Star Trek: The Next Generation and the release of the final season on Blu-Ray: That time when Star Trek fans invaded the SkyDome

(Be warned, the writer of the site has some harsh words for the new movies.)

I admit that I didn't view any of the above videos, because I cringe when they put stuff like this on TV. They do this just to mock us.

Guess now I know why you still call it SkyDome and not by its current name. ;)

They still had their original video board back in 1994, didn't they? The one they have now was added later. I should think that any Trek would look even better on a board like that!

^ I've been there, it's a fine building. No real problem with it that I can see.

If you're talking the name, though? Most Torontonians still call it 'SkyDome' even though it's been called Rogers Centre for awhile now. Sentimental reasons. :)

^And many of us prefer it that way.

That's why I don't dress up in a Starfleet uniform, or any costume of any of the other characters of Star Trek.

It'll always be the SkyDome. I love the building.
I was in Winnipeg when that went on. If I had of been in Ontario, I would have been there as well.

I hear the Argos have basically been kicked out of the stadium (the Jays want a natural grass field). I wonder where they'll play next...

The Argos are there through 2017 - not sure what happens after that. They will be out, but there are a lot of options.
SkyDome is supposed to get grass in 2018. It won't be able to be configured for football. I'm not sure how grass is going to grow there. Maybe UV lights??

^ Probably they'll keep the roof open as long as they can.

Look at it this way - if grass can grow at Chase Field in Phoenix, of all places, it can grow here. :)

As for the Argos - after some Google fu, it seems that they will end up at BMO Field which is due for some heavy renovations.
