Thank you, DS9 Relaunch

I could not be happier with this series! I just finished the books in "Twist of Faith" and I'm starting the Mission:Gamma series this morning, doing most of my reading on the D.C. metro and between D.C. and New York on the bus. It's been awesome, almost as good as the series. Now, I don't know if anybody else does this-- but when I'm reading a new series I tend to put actors and people I know into the characters. Believe it or not, this is what I've come up with. I don't mean to do it, it just happens.

Commander Elias Vaughn: What a fantastic character. In my mind, he is played by Sir Ian McKellen. It makes for an interesting read, especially as I start the Gamma books.

Yevir Linjarin: Hugo Weaving. Not sure how that happened, but it stuck.

Treir: Played by Halle Berry.

Thirishar ch'Thane: Jay Underwood. He fits pretty well, actually. -- His mother is played by a woman I work with.

Taran'atar: Started as a stoic non-face-- but has somehow melded into Kelsey Grammar (believe it or not, it works)

Now, I know that some people find this process of association odd or anti-creative, but I always enjoy deciding what actor would be best for the role-- and 99% of the time it happens naturally while I read. Does ANYBODY else do this? Or am I crazy :).

Please no spoilers past the "Twist of Faith" set, thank you :).

Heh - check the stickies. We've a thread called 'Cast the characters of Trek Lit" - you'll find PLENTY of suggestions for the DS9R characters in there. Plenty of us do it, so you're not any crazier than the rest of us.

There's in fact an entire pinned thread on the subject of casting the characters of TrekLit at the top of this forum. :)

Speaking as Treir's creator, I always imagined Suzie Plakson in the role. Berry's an interesting casting choice, though she's a bit short....

I just finished reading "Twist of Faith" about a week ago and it was definately a great read. I liked there finally being an Andorian main character and having a Bolian first officer who pretty shockingly died early on.

I never saw it coming that Kitana'klan was not the Jem'Hadar sent by Odo. That really really shocked me when he escaped and tried to destroy the station. Seeing Gul Macet again was another plus. There are really so many good things I could say about the books in this omnibus - I was almost as pleased with them as I was with "The Good That Men Do" and that's definately saying something from me.

I might be picking up "A Stitch in Time" this week to continue my Relaunch reading. I would love to read the Mission Gamma series but they are sold out and pretty pricy on Amazon. I'm aware that "These Haunted Seas" is coming out in a few months but since it only contains the first two books it would be disappointing to read that then wait another year for the next omnibus.

With the length of These Haunted Seas, it may take longer than you think to blaze through it. Besides, the later Mission: Gamma books are not as tough to find as the first one.

Yes I just saw that :). I like Treir, at first I had trouble finding a face for her-- but Halle Berry came into my head when it came to light that she was beautiful, seductive and quite capable of using deception to her advantage.

I'm sure you get this a lot, but you are a wonderful writer. The fact that you use your skills to continue this world we all love is simply incredible. Thanks! I see you live in NYC. Since my girlfriend moved to Washington Heights I've been using the DC2NY bus to see her (she's doing the starving actress/singer thing and auditioning all over the city).

I actually pictured Kelsey Grammer as Taran'atar as well after seeing X-Men 3 (He was the best thing in that film).

I was thinking his performance in X3 was exactly what caused me to picture Grammar. Awesome, I'm not alone :)

BTW: Sorry to everybody for missing the sticky thread about casting options. As you can see from my post I thought I was alone in enjoying casting attempts :)

Thanks so much! (And good luck to your girlfriend. That's not an easy thing she's attempting....)

(Of course the joke would be: "She's an actress? Really? What restaurant?")

(Anyhow...)

Kelsey Grammar as Taran'atar is so not what I pictured, although I can see him as Kitana'klan, no problem. My template for Taran'atar has always been Christopher Judge (Teal'c on Stargate SG1). Marco Palmieri -- the DS9 editor and creator of Taran'atar -- has always gone for Phil Morris.

Sorry to disappoint Marco, but Morris is nowhere near stocky enough. What about The Rock?

overall I've enjoyed the DS9 relaunch stuff and the developing relationships between people. The only bit I've found to be a bit of a drag was the seemingly endless
material about Shar and his bondmates - sooooo boring and the andorian section of "worlds of" was equally snoozesome - in my view.

^The Andorian plot wasn't that bad, although it did drag a little bit. I actually enjoy WoDS9: Andor more every time I read it.

The Andorian parts are some of the best stuff! We finally get a chance to flesh out a long standing race of trek and explore thier culture and biology, what they did was totally inventive , what was really boring to me was all that crashed shuttle business on the planet in that first Mission Gamma book, yeah I liked the book and all but it Draaaaged. It's like, find out what's going on on the planet already! Life's short!

It's kinda like the last Harry Potter book "Wow, evil is a foot? Let's hang out camping in the wilderness for a few more months!"

But he did play a Jem'Hadar quite memorably in "Rocks and Shoals," I think it was. Jem'Hadar don't have to be big and bulky to be badass. Taran'atar is a seasoned veteran, an Elder, so it seems fitting to me that he might not be as bulky as a J'H in his youthful prime.

Kinda hard not to get killed by Voldemort after he took over the Ministery of Magic if they'd stuck around Hogwarts...

That must be where that idea came into my mind. I've had him as my "mental actor" for Tarannie for quite a while now, and he fits my personal interpretation perfectly.

Too right, so let's hang out in the woods for month after month after month after month, cause hey, that's makes awesome reading! No wonder Ron was pissed.

You mean the same Phil Morris who already played a Jem'Hadar in the brilliant "Rocks and Shoals"? That Phil Morris? :D

What about The Rock?
I'd rather hire, y'know, an actor....

ETA: Or, uh, y'know, what Christopher said regarding Morris......

I think it did. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was probably the best book in the entire series. :)
