Tennant's Hamlet to air on Christmas Day

Just found out some info that the recent RSC production of Hamlet (also starring Patrick Stewart), which has been filmed by the BBC, will air on Christmas Day here in the UK. Also, the dvd will be available (and is available now for pre-order) in January 2010.

Looks like it's going to be another Tennant-themed Christmas. It was good while it lasted. :techman:

It's not really a Christmas Day play, though, is it?

Your family must be far less disfunctional than mine.

ETA: If memory serves, the BBC seems to like to screen something cultured or "highbrow" on or around Xmas Day - a ballet or opera or something. Having Tennant in a Shakespeare must feel like paydirt for them!

There was a report that Tennant and Patrick Stewart's Hamlet was supposed to be released to theatres in the US as early as this month (this week, in fact). Anyone know if that actually happened?

I know PBS is supposed to air it in early 2010 or something like that.

EDIT: I found the original Variety article, and it looks like it has been rewritten since I first saw it. Apparently it's not Hamlet that's supposed to be released to theatres this week, but rather the film that was featured on Tennant's first episode of Masterpiece Contemporary, "Endgame":

So never mind, I guess.

If it's anything like the stage version, it'll be worth the wait. I think they may have changed a couple of things, but I'm sure it'll still be wonderful!

Here's a shot from the stage version:
