Teal'c & Ronon

I'm catching up on Atlantis and I'm up to episode 4x17: "Midway". It was a pleasant surprise to see Teal'c show up. I've always wondered what a meeting between him and Ronon would be like. What I didn't expect though was Ronon's attitude. He didn't seem to like Teal'c. I waited for some sort of explanation for what was up, but nothing came. What was up with Ronon? Why didn't he like Teal'c? I thought it was because Teal'c was a Jaffa.

Ronon just doesn't like being told what to do. He doesn't even know what a Jaffa is, so why would that upset him?

I think Ronon was used to being the best at what he did (basically the stoic warrior type) and now comes Teal'c who is basically the best ever at being the strongman-of-few-words

it's a classic rivalry. they both fill the same roll in their SG teams and they end up competing

^At least, until he befriends someone. Then he's actually a really nice guy. Until you make him angry, then he reverts to grr arrgh.

This is my guess. Alpha male syndrome. That's why they fought it out.

I think the writers just think it would be cheap if they started out as good buddies like they are Superfriends or something like that. I really liked that joke where Teal'c and Ronon are watching the Three Stooges with stoney faced expressions.

Midway is easily my favourite episode of season 4. It's just so cool. The Ronon and Teal'c storyline just makes me smile so much. The Wraith's attack on the Midway station and the SGC is a really well-done action sequence. And Dr. Kavanagh is fun. "If I knew the code, I'd tell you." Wraith: "That depend on how strong your allegience is." Kavanagh: "It's not that strong." Dr. Lee: "It really isn't."

Ronon's hostility towards Teal'c seemed completely natural. Ronon is not a friendly guy and doesn't make the effort for anyone to like him. In fact I remember back when I heard there was going to be a crossover episode in season 10 of SG-1, a part of me hoped it would include all the Atlantis cast, and that there would be a scene where Teal'c met Teyla and Ronon. Teal'c nod towards them, Teyla would nod back, but Ronon would just glare at Teal'c. Really disappointed that didn't happen.

Actually, I am a bit disappointed we didn't see Teal'c interacting with more of the Atlantis characters. Yeah, I get it, this was supposed to be about him and Ronon, but seeing him talking with the other characters would have been awesome. I mainly feel this way because Teal'c is one of my favourite characters in all Stargate. Actually, it is odd, we've never had a scene between McKay and Teal'c. That would truly be awesome.

The only real flaw the episode has is that it didn't really specify what Teal'c's current status with the SGC is. One would think he's still with the SGC since Carter seemed to have no trouble calling him over to Atlantis, but he wears Jaffa attire throughout the entire episode as opposed to an SG uniform.

On a final note, I noticed during Teal'c and Ronon's "sparring match" there was a lot of Canadian money being passed around. Obviously the real world reason is that it's because the show is filmed in Canada, but I like the in show theory I head that everyone on Atlantis cashes in by winning bets with McKay.

Great episode. Up there with the two-part season premiere and BAMSR for the best of the fourth season, which was, as SGA goes, one of its better years.

^And the way Ronon said "Indeeeed" was priceless.

"I would very much like to procure a weapon such as this."
"Get in line."

If either one ever mentioned the events of "48 Hours," they would be the most awkward moment ever!

Overall, we've never gotten a good idea of what SG-1's status is post-"The Ark of Truth." I presume Teal'c, Col. Mitchell, Vala, & Daniel Jackson are still working under General Landry, albeit sans Col. Carter. But it's never totally clear.

Although, it seems Teal'c's status has always been a bit flexible. It seemed pretty easy for him to go to & fro between the SGC & the Free Jaffa Nation in Season 9. In fact, even when he was still clearly 100% a member of SG-1 in "Heroes, Part 2," it seemed that his status was just murky enough that Mr. Woolsey wasn't quite sure what punishment to threaten him with if he didn't cooperate with the investigation.

I like when Ronon called Teal'c out on saying 'indeed' all the time.

"You say that a lot."
"I say what a lot?"
"'Indeed.'"
"...I had not noticed."

:techman:

I especially love the way Christopher Judge plays Teal'c's genuine surprise when Ronon points it out.

Which means that he did not get it at all that everyone was teasing him at the end of "Unending." Probably just assumed it was some weird Earth humor he'd missed that they all knew to say it at the same moment.

Midway is one of my all-time favorite SG: Atlantis episodes. Not just for the really cool team-up of Ronon and Teal'c, but also for how it brought back the Wraith as a major threat.

Plus it was just fun watching R & T mowing down the Wraith warriors like a good old fashioned action movie.
