TAS-style Movie-era Illustrations?

GMSkarka

Does anybody know if this has been done before? Animated-Trek-style illustrations, but with the crew in movie-era gear (TMP or TWOK-through-TUC)?

Considering taking a crack at it myself, but less so if it would just be duplicating efforts.

That could be interesting. I often wish that Filmation had revived TAS in 1980 or so, updated to a post-TMP setting. After all, they did sequels/revivals of other shows they'd made, including The New Adventures of Batman, the syndicated Fat Albert revival, and Gilligan's Planet. And Filmation was making its highest-quality shows around that time in terms of animation and music. So not only would it have been an opportunity to get more TMP-era screen stories, but it would've been an opportunity to see an animated Trek with better production values.

Not to mention that TMP seeded all those alien crewmembers in the background. An animated series could've actually developed them as characters and raised their profile.

It would be interesting to "update" the characters with their movie-era hairstyles and to make them look a little older.

As far as I know, there's been only one such image:

From www.startrekanimated.com

I say go for it.

Would the cast have been affordable after TMP to make a revival/continuation of TAS?

I don't see why not -- Shatner had the highest profile of any of them, and he was still doing television (T.J. Hooker) for another 7 years after TMP...

...

...

...of course, the entire question is sort of immaterial to the process of producing some TMP-era TAS-style artwork for the fun of it...

Does this count in your view?

This was a free hand illustration I made in 1997 for someone posting fan fiction novels centering upon M'Ress. The background is an image from a CD of clip art released by Corel.

Sincerely,

Bill

Nice one, Redfern. :techman:

Of course, M'Ress and Arex were both featured in the movie-era costumes when DC Comics were doing Star Trek, and featured a few times there-in as crewmembers aboard Enterprise-A.

^ Somebody get either IDW, or Cartoon Network and the makers of Archer on the line. This needs to happen. YESTERDAY.

Thank you, GMSharka,

Though the person (who died in 13 years ago this month) gave the impression his first story took place during the "5 year mission", Paul S. Gibbs wanted M'Ress to wear the "Wrath of Khan" era uniform. So that's what I depicted. So, I thought it fit the discussion. ("ol' timers" here has already seen me post this image, so I'm kinda' surprised I didn't see a post more or less reading, "Oh, no; not again!")

Nice touch giving Chapel the hairstyle she wore in TMP. Everyone remembers Scotty with his moustache, but casual viewers probably didn't register Chapel's more pragmatic fashion.

Sincerely,

Bill

I'll be doing a bunch more of these "TMP-Animated" images -- they're going to be used as site illustration for a project I'll be talking about more in the Fan Productions forum --

I'm looking at doing an audio series -- inspired by the great DOCTOR WHO audios from Big Finish Audio (which includes folks who actually got their start doing unlicensed fan audios), as well as the mid-70s STAR TREK LP releases from Peter Pan/Power Records.

The idea would be to set the series during the second 5-year mission.

Basically, I've been inspired by the folks at STAR TREK CONTINUES, and have decided to use my audio-production chops to produce something which will hopefully be as good.

We're still missing Chekov; that character will be the biggest challenge, since he was absent from TAS. Would also be interesting to see Ilia and Decker in animated form as well.
