TAS Shuttlecraft Copernicus

^ I'm thinking it might make sense to scale the Ericsson up a bit -- maybe to the ~75'-100' range? That would make it a more sensible model for the ~70 meter BoP.

This is an interesting concept most particularly in profile. In plan view, though, it looks too wide for my tastes. When I look at this I see it as something earlier than immediately pre TOS. Perhaps early 22nd century.
This has something I find intriguing in the potential sense. It looks like it has possibilities if adapted with modified proportions and detail.

THIS IS ALL ARIDAS' FAULT!

He got me thinking about a pre TOS shuttlecraft design when I've got enough stuff going as it is.

I sketched this up in the coffee shop last night.

My thinking behind this early concept is not only adapting some of MJ's early ideas, but also considering what they could have built as a fullsize mockup.

I actually like that quite a bit. You have captured the retro styling without abandoning the cube-y, utilitarian look of Galileo. I think you did the thing that needed to be done -- abandon that rounded front with the truck window. But also like the way you have reworked the pylon to integrate it better with the hull. This reminds me of something that Masao mentioned to me once -- in order for the design to look older, it shouldn't look incomplete or half-baked. It needs to still look like a complete, well-integrated design, only reflecting an earlier technology. It looks like you've done that well with this shuttlecraft. I'll be very interested to see how you do the various views.

^^ THANKS to you, sir, I'm even contemplating doing up perhaps two sheets of exterior views for this and including them in my Class F set.

Hmmm. On the other hand I could do another Starfleet Command Library volume called Early Starfleet.

BTW, aridas, what is that design in your avatar? Do you have a link for some more detailed views?

Warped9! This might be the first pre-TOS shuttle design that I've liked. Very nice work.

For reference, could you post the Jeffries sketch that inspired you?

Maybe you were on leave when I did this here, about a year ago. Vektor took a shine to it and we worked on it for awhile. He made some very valuable contributions to the design.

Here is the thread (with Vektor's excellent work) --

And the multiple views you asked for --

The tricky thing about designing a fictional vehicle is that although you can borrow and adapt elements from other things in the end it still has to look integrated and aethetically whole rather than an obvious mish-mash of borrowed parts. And then there's a matter of adding just the right telling details to finish it off. When I apply myself to coming up with something new I experiment and agonize over getting the overall shape and proportions just right and then begin trying to apply the right detail to bring it all together.

I've always disliked how the Deadalus-class ship has been done because the models and drawings I've seen of it are little more than straight copy of MJ's basic sketch. It just doesn't look finished. And then there's the unspoken rule of fictional vehicles: there should be something heroic or at least visually cohesive about the design. The Deadalus as I've seen has none of those things. I think it could be done, but I haven't seen it yet, and I can see why MJ abandoned the general concept.
