Talosians and 20th Century Earthers

In the S3 VOY episode "Future's End," S.E.T.I. astronomer Rain Robinson has a Talosian action figure on her desk. The Talosians are the species from S1 TOS "The Menagerie" (also "The Cage") and were masters of mental manipulation. I was hoping that the creative minds at TrekBBS could help speculate as to possible in-universe explanations for the existence of this depiction of an alien race in the midst of 1996 Earth. Any thoughts?

Rain Robinson has access to some off world retail establishments. But she was willing to pay the shipping.

Talosians are sharply divided in two: those who travel, and those who prefer entertainment and cold pizza. Those who travel tend to account for 86% of the reports on Greys, and there are plenty of eyewitness accounts, as the traveling folks don't have self-esteem issues. Those who sit in the basement of their motherworld do not appreciate being photographed. And I can't blame them, what with that pale, unhealthily pink complexion and all.

Maybe they were similar looking baddies on Galaxy Quest? You know that show about a spaceship exploring outer space which starred Sigourney Weaver! Shame they never made it into a big, big movie! :D

Don't worry, guys. I'll start work on my CBS pitch for a new Star Trek show set in the 28th century featuring a timeship commanded by a Talosian. The pilot episode will have them stranded in 1995 (guest starring Sarah Silverman!) where they will leave action figure mementos.

Every episode will be dedicated to answering these grand mysteries of Star Trek.

I just know that'll get a green light!

Be careful! The Discovery folks might steal that idea. They love fanwank.

I was recently reading another thread where a user (sorry I'm not more specific) postulated that everything we've seen post-Cage has been an illusion created by the Talosians. This action figure may be a corroborating clue! Kind of a *wink wink* from those brainy aliens....

So Kirk and his crew are still trapped in orbit around Talos IV? Wow! And I thought they'd got away from there!

No; Pike and his crew. But that would raise the question of how Spock got away.

Obviously the entire Prime timeline would, under that theory, have to be a Talosian illusion, and Kirk's adventures (presumably with an Andorian science officer named Thelin) would probably take a completely different shape.

Actually, now that I think about it, this is hardly the first time the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth walls have been broken. Consider the final episode of Newhart. Or the ending of Blazing Saddles. And it's not confined to comedies: Emergency! debuted as a spin-off of Adam-12 (with the principals of that series appearing in the pilot), and yet in a later season, Adam-12 was an in-universe TV series.

But their Talosians wouldn't be recognizable as being the same race as her action figure.

the show-makers.

In-universe, it could be an action figure of any number of big-headed beings from sci-fi over the years. I wonder what the big twentieth-century Earth sci-fi franchises were within the Trek universe?

Well, in-universe, it looks very much like a Talosian (specifically the Talosian Keeper), with the same robe and pendant. It could be like Timo said, that some Talosians actually left the planet and came into contact with Earth (and a UFO nut like Robinson has a figure based on this reported alien).

It could also be that the Talosians don't actually look like what we see, and their appearance is in fact based on some old Earth sci-fi show that Robinson watched and Pike was vaguely familiar with. This would explain how they don't understand humanoid anatomy, despite being miniature humans themselves.

How do we know the Talosians really look like Butt-head aliens? They are masters of illusion!!!! Maybe that form was to make Pike and Vina more comfortable. Perhaps they really are the crab like creatures from the story outline. Maybe Vina had a "Talosian" action figure as a child and they used that memory.
