Symbiosis question re: Merritt Butrick & Judson Scott

Last night I rewatched "Symbiosis" which I hadn't seen in quite a while. Firstly, i hadn't remembered how bad that episode was (no surprise really, coming from the first season)....

More surprising to me was that I didn't remember Judson Scott being in it! And he was even more recognizable than Butrick was.

Anyway, my question is, if anyone knows, how did BOTH of these actors from TWOK get to appear together on a Next Gen episode? Does anyone have any background information on the casting of that episode?

AFAIK, it was a fluke of casting. The actors didn't actually work on ST II at the same time, sharing no scenes together.

I remember being at a Creation Convention featuring Walter Koenig in January 1984. We'd just seen an extensive pre-release slideshow about ST III, before his spot, and someone in the audience asked Walter what it was like to work with "Lt. Howard Hunter" (ie. from "Hill Street Blues", playing Captain Styles in ST III.)

His shocked response was, "James B Sikking is in our movie?"

That's too funny, but not all that uncommon. Koenig is a perfect example. He was the only TOS cast member to actually have a scene with Montalban in TWOK. (And yes, I know he wasn't in Space Seed. ;)) But I'm just making the point that just because two actors are in the same movie, unless they share a scene, they may never run into one another.

Somehow seems like karma that the only one of the Enterprise Seven who didn't meet Khan in Space Seed is the only one to meet him in TWoK. :)

I know that people can be in the same movie and never even be aware of the other actor being in it too. (Hell, i was an extra in a movie that Burt Lancaster was in, only he wasn't in the scenes i was in...so he wasn't there. WAH!)

But it just seemed so....interesting that both actors from TWOK should play opposite each other in TNG episode. So, as far as you guys know, it wasn't anything planned. It just happened that way. That's interesting.

Was Merrit Buttrick the actor who played Kirk's son? PRAETOR seems to be resident expert on him and features him in his AV. unless of course I don't know what the heck I'm on about - happens to me more and more. . .

Sorry PRAETOR - I think that's the wrong one - dang. Old age creeping up on me!

creeping up nuthin' it's already here! I still haven't figured the poster who uses Buttrick as his AV - I know it's Praetor - sorry Praetor. Oh well, the happy part about losing my mind is I forget about it often enough to be fairly happy! It's not all bad! :techman:
