SyFy's Defiance - Season 3 Discussion

Gryffindorian

Vice Admiral
Admiral
The third season premiered on June 12 with a two-hour episode. Last season, the Earth Republic had taken over Defiance and seized Rafe McCawley's gulanite mines. Pottinger tried to win over Amanda's affections, kidnapping the Tarrs so that she could avenge Kenya's murder, but she opted not to. Pilar abducted Christie, Alak, and their baby. And the entity inside Irisa's body caused her to destroy new New York City and kill countless people. She and Nolan subsequently ended up in the mines and were protected inside a stasis pod as the caves collapsed above them.

Fast forward seven months: Defiance has changed. E-Rep is gone. The town has very little energy left to keep it running. And a father-daughter duo from a mysterious alien race known as the Omec come searching for energy source. Elsewhere, a vicious general named Tak from the Votanis Collective is planning on invading Defiance.

It's almost as if they've got new writers for this season. There's a seven-month gap in storytelling. Although it's not unusual for season premieres to have a fresh start plotwise, I didn't feel much of a connection between this and last season. Man, they slaugtered the McCawleys - Rafe, Quentin, Christie, what the hell?!? Maybe they were rushing to introduce the new threats. Nolan can handle a psychopath Castithan warlord, but there's a ship full of Omecs in hypersleep orbiting around Earth. Things could get really ugly.

What say you?
