Survivor Blood v. Water: Take Two

New season starts tonight, I'm pretty excited!

I was never a fan of redemption island, but I thought the one place it worked was the twist of giving the loved one the option to switch places, so I'm surprised they nixed it in favor of exile island this year. I guess we'll see how that plays out.

As I understand it, they went into it with the intentions of doing R.I. again. But, after they started filming and before the first challenge that would have affected it, Jeff remembered a previous ... something ... and they decided to do away with R.I. in favor of an updated version of ... whatever. The interview was vague.

I haven't seen a single commercial for the new season, other than the preview during last season's reunion. I have heard that they are not bringing in previous players. How many seasons has it been since we've had a completely-fresh cast?

If nobody's going for the combined Survivor/BB thread I started I'll go close it.

It was completely fresh last season but before that it hadn't been since One World.

I'm glad RI is gone. It eats up way too much screen time. Hopefully they don't replace it with something that eats up just as much screen time.

I just hope John Rocker loses almost immediately. If he's on too long I may quit the season for the first time in its history. The first episode I saw was season 1, episode 5. Other than recap eps I've only missed a handful of episodes since. But if John Rocker somehow took a wrong turn at the Celebrity Apprentice casting office and wound up on Survivor, I will not watch him be a hateful dick all season.

I have to say, John Rocker seemed surprisingly decent in today's episode. The ads showed him yelling at people, hopefully it's the ads that were lying.

It's a shame that Nadiya got voted out based on Amazing Race and not based on something she did on the show, but I guess that's how you have to think in episode one. Why did Josh throw that vote to Baylor? I think he missed an opportunity to get in the majority there, and I think that's going to cost him big.

So I thought the same thing about Rocker, he dominated in the challenge and came out looking pretty tolerable. I guess time will tell. It's hard to hide your true personality on Survivor, time and deprivation always tend to bring it out.

Did Josh throw his vote to Baylor? I didn't watch the credits where it showed everyone's vote, but final vote was 5-3-1, meaning if Josh did throw it to Baylor, one of the girls voted for Nadia? Anyone watch pay attention to that?

I thought it was fairly clear why Josh threw his vote away; he ultimately chose not to put himself in the position of committing to either of the two alliance groups in his tribe (at least not yet).

I liked Nadiya and Natalie in Amazing Race, but Nadiya's repeated comments that she considered the gay guy to be "one of the girls" was just crass.

Not much in the way of likable cast members so far. I'm ok with Nadiya going first, didn't like those two at all on Amazing Race... speaking of which I think I am a solid 3 seasons behind on that show. I should really throw on a season of that while doing a deep clean of my apartment or something.

I didn't watch the first season, but started around season 2, and kept watching. Every season, it got a little worse. I don't mean the episodes themselves, I mean their airing. CBS put them up on Sunday night, following some sports event, then 60 minutes.

They kept getting progressively later and later. I would add extra time to the DVR, and would still miss a good chunk of the episode. The final straw was one where I tacked on an extra two hours, and even with that buffer, only got the first five minutes, because of sports over-runs. I haven't watched an episode since.

Now that they are moving to Fridays, I may start watching again.

Yeah, those NFL overruns make it a pain to catch the start of Amazing Race. I'm glad it got moved to Friday when nothing else is on.

You knew John Rocker was going to be a big team player at challenges, since he was on a professional sports team. The question is whether he's going to start bullying people and talking about his views on immigrants. So far he hasn't.

You don't think the cast is likable? I agree nobody's stood out as the 'lovable guy' yet. But so far everybody is playing the game and nobody is intolerable. Looks like Baylor was the 5th vote for Nadiya, I wonder what made her not go along with the girls.

Looks to me like Baylor and Josh decided to vote as pair, so my guess would be they decided pre-tribal to go Nadyia, so Josh knew there would be 5 for Nadyia without him and then threw his vote to Baylor (not sure why he would pick her), so that his vote was meaningless. It was weird.

And yeah, Nadiya talking about gay guys was cringeworthy. That's like something Michael Scott would have said on The Office.

Josh's vote seemed to me like an indication he can't handle pressure well.

Yep, NFL absolutely murders Sunday night shows. I pirate most of my TV, one of the main reasons is it's just more convenient. I never have to worry about whether something overruns, or whether my DVR's data provider has everything up to date, or whatever. Just whenever it airs, an hour or two later it will be on my computer ready to go. My issue with TAR is just that I haven't felt motivated to watch it. Which is why I think it might be good fodder for household chore background noise. I just need to remember to do it! I have 3 seasons worth, commercials edited out and ready to go.

As for likable characters... yeah I don't mean they're necessarily hateable either. They're just not very interesting so far... but it's early, some really good seasons have looked pretty bland at the start.

John Rocker managed not to be an asshole yet (surprise) and performed well in the challenge (no surprise, steroid free though it was), but the hunger, fatigue, and bad weather hasn't set in yet, so I have no doubt he'll unleash his inner bigot and/or dickhead soon enough. I love that in his dumbass attempt to create an alias to try and fool that Hobbit-looking kid (we're walking through a wetland, therefore my name is John Wetland) he actually managed to give a fake name which sounds exactly like another professional baseball pitcher who played during roughly the same time period he did. That's like James Bond trying to convince people that he wasn't a spy by saying his real name is Jason Born because he happened to be walking through a maternity ward at the time.

So glad they already sent one of the annoying Amazing Race twins home. I couldn't stand them on TAR and hopefully separately the remaining sister won't be as irritating and shrill. Her sister Nadiya was already an ass with the constant references to Josh being "one of the girls" which he clearly didn't appreciate, and which is insulting regardless. Unless someone like Colton says he prefers the company of women and wants to be "one of the girls" like he did his first time on the show, one shouldn't assume that that's okay to call a gay man that.

I have high hopes for Val and Jeremy, although sticking your neck out and volunteering for the first challenge at BvW is stupid, because you know they're going to do something with your loved one. Although Jeff twisting the knife and also making him send away one of his own teammates was harsh. Choosing the likeable Louisianan firefighter guy to go with her and help her was a good choice, although the constant paternalism about protecting his wife, while sweet, was kind of annoying. She didn't seem to appreciate it either, seeing as how she's a cop and hardly helpless. Hopefully that was just opening day jitters, since I like them, and I think as a former quarterback (smart and athletic) and firefighter and her as a cop they could potentially make a potent social, athletic, and strategic pair. Plus, they already have a bond with firefighter Wes and his son animated movie Bilbo Baggins, so that can help.

I'm happy they switched out Redemption Island with Exile Island, because RI was too much of a time waster and undercut the tribal vote. Hopefully Exile will give some strategic function without drawing too much time from the challenges and scrambling at camp.

That was an impressive first immunity challenge. It drew on past obstacles while incorporating new hurdles to overcome. Apparently that final puzzle took forever to complete and we saw a massively edited for time version (much more so than usual).

The tribal was rather boring, even with Josh's odd vote for his tribe friend Baylor. I thought he might be in trouble when he said he was in the middle playing both sides, because those people often get voted out. I'd like to see him and his boyfriend do well.

I liked Dale and was a bit bummed to see them so predictably almost vote out the old guy despite his usefulness with the fire and around camp, and his general likeability. It would be funny if he got voted out without ever knowing that he found the "hidden" immunity idol at the water well, which I assume that thing he picked up (but didn't seem to know) was, given Val's Exile Island clue.

Nothing blew me away about the first episode, but then I felt the same way about the last Blood and Water episode one, and that turned out great.

I don't think that thing he found was the hidden idol, I think it was the clue to where to find the hidden idol. Usually when you find the idol there's a piece of paper wrapped up with it explaining its powers.

I think I like the 'reward duels'.

Agreed. She was annoying, going on and on and on about her skills and time on Amazing Race. As if she didn't quite realize she was on another series now. Her patronizing talk down to "the gay guy" just ensured I wanted her gone. I'm glad I won't be seeing her again until the finale ... And if history shows anything, she won't even be allowed to speak during the reunion. So, bonus.

I don't remember her talking about her "skills" on The Amazing Race. What she said was that the two shows were very different and she made the point that on The Amazing Race, the racers had their essentials provided (food, shelter). She also said that on The Amazing Race they were always told exactly what they had to do everywhere they went, whereas on Survivor, (paraphrase) "Here's your island, do whatever the hell you want."

So no, I don't see that she was bragging. She was rude and crass to the gay guy (don't remember his name) and evidently forgot that even though she and her sister made it through some of the more disgusting tasks on The Amazing Race, Survivor needs social skills she just didn't have.

My wife and I both cheered when Nadia was sent packing. She and her sister have been the most annoying contestants on either TAR or Survivor. They were always yelling and calling each other Twinnie and just plain annoying with no social skills whatever.

As for the guy who competed against his wife in the first challenge, I think he pasted a huge bulls eye on his back. If your team has any doubts where your loyalty lies, then you will also be sent packing. I was really hoping for a redemption island kind of thing and have the husband sent over with his wife and then watch them duel it out to stay in the game. That would have been fun.

The Amazing Race starts tonight and am interested to see how that pans out.

I wouldn't worry about Amazing Race. Amazing Race is a show that's good at delivering pretty much the exact same entertainment level every year. The only season they really failed to do that is the family season. They must have had some legal issue with sending a nine year old to other countries but I don't know what made them think it was a good idea to have the show take place entirely in the US.

It's slightly less entertaining when the huge luck factor has too much of an impact, and more entertaining when you have somebody like Rob, but it's pretty much just the exact same thing over and over. Easily the most consistent show on TV.

What would you say the odds are that Nicole & Hayden race in the Spring season? 30-40%?

I don't know anything about odds, but I'd enjoy watching that. As long as she doesn't talk too much.

I'd prefer watching Donny and his girlfriend on The Amazing Race, though.
