Surak's Soul and The Seventh

Sitting in a McDonald's parking lot at 2 am, drinking a coke, and thinking about a Trek book I read two years ago. Livin' the dream.

Anyways, I did a partial Enterprise rewatch recently, and the season two episode "The Seventh" reminded me of Surak's Soul by J. M. Dillard. The book and episode are similar in some respects and I believe CLB explained that it was a coincidence and that Dillard may have been able to go back and tweak her book a bit.

Here's the thing though: the book isn't very good. It doesn't even feel complete to me. Dillard just rehashes some concepts she used in previous books, and then wraps things up with an extremely abrupt ending. Is it possible that there was more than a little "tweaking" done to the book? It reads like something slapped together in a hurry.

Very disappointing to me as I'm a fan of T'Pol and I've actually enjoyed a couple of Dillard's books. "The Seventh" isn't a great episode either, fwiw. It raises a lot of intriguing questions and doesn't really do anything too interesting by way of answering them.

Ironically, I think "Surak's Soul" would have worked better as an expanded novelization of "The Seventh."

P.S. Anytime I do a rewatch of a series, I usually end up doing a few animated gifs and random Photoshop pics. Like I said, I'm a fan of T'Pol so I've made several of her recently. Here's one I finished a few minutes ago:
