STXII and the opening scene of Trek 2009 (spoilers)

Spoilers from Star Trek Into Darkness below.

I just realized this while watching the movie a second time. When Kirk awakes after being revived, a sound bite is obscurely played. The same sound bite from the 2009 movie where pike says that "He (Kirk's dad) saved 800 lives, including your mother's and yours. I dare you to do better. "

This is very fascinating considering that throughout Star Trek Into Darkness Enterprises crew is alluded to be Kirk's own family. Kirk saved everyone that was (Still) on board of the enterprise along with his "family", thus living up to Pike's "Dare" (Which is closure for his character) and finally becoming a respectable captain. Then the movie closes out in reference to the original series (A 5 year long mission) and says that infamous quote.

I'm not sure if this was incredibly obvious but I found it to be really bittersweet regardless. If there isn't going to be a third installment in this "reboot" franchise, I'm pretty happy with this ending.

I never likened the soundbyte to Kirk actually doing better by saving the Enterprise, but now that you mention it... great stuff! :techman:

There are also other sound bytes from ST09 as well, most notably from the opening scene between George and Wiona Kirk

If you notice at the end, Giacchino uses the Alexander Courage theme as Kirk takes the chair. He stated that he held off on using it in the first film because that theme signified that they were the crew and not just a bunch of people who happen to work on the same ship...that they had become a family. So his using it at the end of STID definitely signifies that they're a family now, and the 5 year mission has begun.

I'm satisfied with this ending if we do not get a third film in the Abrams series (I have little doubt that there will be a third one, though). It leaves off just as the famous five year mission starts. It is the origin story of TOS. Both a prequel and a reboot.

That is great stuff about Kirk living up to the dare :techman:

Thanks for that insight!
