STXI places 93 on Top 100 Sci-Fi List

The latest movie entry places near the bottom of the list. I'm surprised that it even made the list.

19 - Wrath of Khan
67 - Undiscovered Country
93 - Star Trek

Kind of odd that TUC is up there and not TMP. (TUC wouldn't make my top 100 best anything except movies that disappointed me.) I would've thought TWOK would be in the top ten.

But I can't take this sort of poll seriously - Planet Of The Apes, Total recall and Robocop are better SF films than Clockwork Orange, La Jetee, Videodrome, The Stalker (Tarkovksy), Children of Men, Dark City et al????

Naw...

It was nice to see Altered States, Moon, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Delicatessen (but oddly, no City Of Lost Children), The Quiet Earth, A Boy And His Dog and Silent Running listed but there's also a buncha crappy movies on the list.

These lists are probably best for stimulating discussion about rankings and ommissions, e.g. as much as I love Blade Runner, I doubt it's the best SF movie of all time. And Planet of the Apes doesn't deserve to be in the top ten (nor does Terminator IMO, as it's more action movie than SF to me). I'm also miffed that Quatermass & The Pit is missing - I love that movie ("What color is the sky?'..."It's...browwnnnwn...sob"). I don't have a particualr love for Westworld either, certainly not over about 50 much better films.

But that's what makes lists topics of discussion, eh?

Star Trek deserves to be far, far higher.

I also agree that TUC is a far better film than TMP.

I'm not sure Star Trek XI should be in there. It's far too recent to be placed in any list objectively. I would swap it with TMP. It's not the best Star Trek film, but it's damn good sci-fi.

What's wrong with recent films exactly?

That's why I think that list is pretty poor. It suffers from predictable 'don't disturb the classics' syndrome, in that it's terrified of having more than 1 or 2 modern films in the top 30. Just because a sci-fi film was made in the 70s or 80s, that seems to automatically give it a place in the top 30.

Star Trek has been branded the best prequel of all time, certainly the best sci-fi one, so why is it at 93? The film is an outstanding modern achievement, yet the classics were seemingly better because they were made decades ago. It's bull.

With recent films, people are prone to making knee-jerk judgments about whether it is bad or good. It's bes to let things settle, give it a few years, and let it digest before you being to proclaim it as one of the best sci-fi movies ever

Some dodgey choices on there, but it's good to see Brazil included. Sadly TMP is missing.
Would have Preferd TMP over Brazil.:shifty:
TMP is not even in the same league as Brazil.

Time travel. Killer robots. Sounds like SF to me. :vulcan:

What does "it is more action than SF" mean? Most films can be classified in several genres. The fact that it has some action scenes doesn't maje it any less SF.

A film doesn't have to contain endless, boring space porn sequences to be 'great SF'. :shifty:

By who? The Official Prequel Recognition Board?

And of course it would; it's the most recent (plus the competition is hardly the worth mentioning). It's like how years ago you'd find Coldplay and Robbie Williams in the 'Greatest Band Of The Times' lists because they were modern and relatively fresh. These days, they'd struggle to make the Top 100.

Star Trek XI needs more time on the vine I think before making such a list, though the list is a tad questionable. I mean no War of the Worlds ('54) and When Worlds Collide? The effects were HUGE for their time and are considered classics.

So does The Thing from Another World, some like Children of Men and a few others hardly come close to matching the classics of old. I do think the original Planet does beling in the top ten just for Serling's classic ending. Just fantastic writing.

It was a good list..not a definitive list but a good one none the less.

Vons

Lists like this tend to suffer from the 'don't disturb the classics' syndrome you describe or from a glut of recent films crowding out the older ones. (A lot of the lists you'll see around here seem to reflect the notion that all of the best movies in history were made post-Star Wars. Yes, that's utterly ridiculous, but it does happen more often than not, and don't get me started about the reaction some younger members of the viewing audience have toward anything shot in B&W.) As lists go, I think this one has a pretty good balance but, as with all such lists, there are some rankings I find a bit questionable.

Rackon was hitting the nail on the head with this:

The only real surprise would have been if you'd missed the opportunity to point it out. ;)

I was dismayed to see Event Horizon on the list, and above Trek XI at that. Though the film was technically well done, it was way too disturbing for my tastes.

None of the other TREK movies made the Top 100? I can understand not seeing ,say, TFF, INS or NEM on there. But there were some glaring omissions based on what I read.
