Stuff that make you wonder but not own thread worthy

Yeah, I took that to mean the energy surge from their warp core. Otherwise the Vulcans would surely have detected a giant, super-advanced starship hanging around this backwater planet.

I was gonna say I don't like "The First Duty" because I don't like those kids doing their space maneuver and thinking it was gonna make them look cool and everyone was gonna cheer, when I feel like in real military or not organisations this kinda wildcard stuff is frowned upon. But then again I do like the cult of personality that leads them to try that stupid shit and hoping it gets results, which we'd see again in "Valiant." But I also don't like that Wesley had to be kinda manhandled into coming forward by Picard. I feel like Tom Paris' backstory kinda gives me what I wish Wesley had done himself, in coming forward of his own volition.

It didn't make me wonder, but seeing it again made me want to comment on it.

I adore how in Time's Arrow Part 2 at the end Picard asks Samuel to pay Mrs Carmichael for the board costs. It's such an irrelevant line to the story and Star Trek in general. It was hundreds of years ago, Picard could have given it no thought.

But it speaks to the decency of him and Starfleet that he did it, and the writers wanted you to see that. And just from a writing perspective it doesn't feel like it's a dangling thread left.

For me it's a lovely moment.

P.S. If were a scene in Picard it'd have Shaw going "That boomer? Ain't she dead now? Her crib was mid. And Starfleet records show her great, great, great grand son was a member of ICE. Unpopular opinion: she's not making bank from me."

Well, it also speaks to his intent to preserve the timeline. Mrs. Carmichael would've likely rented that space to other borders, were they not there. There's a chance that if he stiffed the bill, it might've caused financial strain on her, that may have had unforeseeable effects on history, that he's trying to minimize.

... At least now he is. I'm still not sure why he'd be changing oil lamp burners, to make them safer during San Francisco's (upcoming) earthquakes. I like to think he actually wasn't. He needed that excuse so he could plant tracking devices.

Season 6 and 7 had episodes like Schisms and Emergence but I always wished that they had been done earlier in the series because they had the potential both for follow on stories which never happened of course. Two of my most favourite episodes.

For me it's the wondering of what could have been

I thought Schisms had a great and unique premise and was well executed. When I heard the premise for Emergence I expected to hate it because it sounded hokey, but I surprised myself by greatly enjoying the episode.

I like to think once Riker thrashed those click clackers they f***ed off for good :guffaw:

If I were to pick one episode of TNG to follow up on, it would be either "Schisms" or "Conspiracy". Both almost demanded a sequel.
I mean... I'd watch them & very likely enjoy them, but I'm also cool with how it turned out. Schisms in particular is meant to be ominous & spooky, & what's more ominous & spooky than that they were never heard from or spoken of again? lol

Conspiracy is a harder pill to swallow, because they'd already infiltrated the whole of Starfleet & overtaken top leadership. We get nothing more about that? Things just "be cool" not long after? To be fair though, that follow-up has to happen consecutively, or not at all, because I don't know how you write them back in, long after it was dropped & presumed resolved. If they've still been out there all this time, & still a threat, then WTF we been doing all this time galavanting about the cosmos?

Yeah I like how vague Schisms is, I'm really glad that Time Squared wasn't retroactively revealed to be Q for the same reason. A lot of stories work brilliantly where you just sort of half-glimpse something profoundly strange toward the climax, and never get any more information than that.

What makes "Conspiracy" the bigger shame it wasn't followed up on was the signal at the end.

I agree that there should be some mystery left in the universe. It's why "PERSISTENCE OF VISION" works so well for me... can't even be sure any of it actually happened.

Nah, it's ok to leave a thread dangling. They just haven't followed up on it *yet*.

Star Trek also did that whole story much more effectively with the Changelings.

I don't think it's that deep. I mean... he said this to Samuel Clemens who had been on board the Enterprise D in the 24th century. That ship had sailed! And I don't think they want to cloud the story with all that as if you pick away at that tapestry you present lots of what ifs from their time there. Maybe she would have been vacant that week, but with that boost of money she went and setup one of American's greatest crime syndicates. Samuel was poorer so couldn't publish his book etc....

I think it was just a nice moment and meant to be seen as such.

I never thought he was. It was merely an excuse.

I'm quite fond of it too. I question with just two episodes to go if that was the right call in terms of a choice, your last chance to tell stories... but I enjoy it as an episode.

I'm sort of middle of the road with "Emergence", but I absolutely agree with their choice to make one of the final episodes be about probably THE most important character of TNG: the Enterprise herself.
