Strengths/weaknesses of each captain

indolover

Fleet Captain
What would you say were the strengths/weaknesses of each captain? For me, it's as so:

Kirk

Strength - Charismatic and likeable
Weakness - Too cavalier and maybe too unorthodox

Picard

Strength - Reasoning and wisdom, as well as diplomacy
Weakness - Can be overly moral

Sisko

Strength - No nonsense, takes no crap from anybody and is a strong and confident man
Weakness - Obsession, and even ego. The Michael Eddington arc indicates this

Janeway

Strength - Intelligent and protective of her crew (almost in a motherly sense)
Weakness - Can be erratic, and even overly moral like Picard

Archer

Strength - Determined and won't stop until he gets what is required
Weakness - Too indecisive sometimes, and distrusting.
Weakness

That sounds pretty good to me, although you failed to mention Janeway having a vagina as her biggest weakness.

(Nods)

You have to admit, Archer's weaknesses are one of the things that made the character interesting. Most series Captains were played as knowledgeable and well trained. Scott Bakula, maybe unintentional, played Archer as a man completely out of his depth, he didn't know what he was doing and it showed. Towards the very end of the series Archer did grow into his position. A interesting character study.

Brilliant performance (perhaps).

.

I'd say that Kirk's intelligence was another of his strengths. It saved him and his crew more than once.

Case in point: In "I, Mudd", Kirk makes a remark on the attractiveness of a specific model of the androids.

He's a starsip captain...on a mission...and he's commenting...on the hotness...of androids.

You'd think the man was deprived.

I actually think it's a lot of this. Bakula is generally a pretty good actor. I think, given the premise of the show and the uneven writing, he just sort of went with it.

Well it had probably been fifteen, twenty whole minutes since his last sexual encounter.

Whatnow? Moral = concerned with principles of right and wrong. I disagree that someone can be 'overly moral'. Self-righteous, maybe, believing that you alone know what is right for everyone, but 'overly moral' does not work.

You're right. He's not too moral, as, as you said, you can't be "too moral". He is too self-righteous sometimes, and he tends to stick too much to the Prime Directive as the highest moral imperative - which it definitely should not be IMO. Excuse me, but using the PD to excuse letting community of people die is just wrong and inexcusable. I believe that higher moral principles trump Starfleet principles and regulations any time. Saving people from death and extinction is far more important than sticking to the PD to the letter.

^Absolutely. Not interfering with a people's 'natural development' is pointless if they're about to be crushed by an asteroid or something. Then they'd all be dead and their development is over. Stupid.

Sisko- Strengths; Courageous, strong leadership skills and presence, has combat experience, has engineering experience. His actions may have helped saved the Alpha Quadrant.

Weaknesses; Can be impulsive, taking potentially dangerous actions while ignoring advice of crew members or orders of superior officers. Known for high risk behaviors at times.

Has displayed ego problems that may have interfered with his judgement at times.

Picard: Loyal, strong moral core, strong leadership skills, has a special talent for being persistent, which has saved his crew many times. Has strong diplomatic skills.

Weaknesses; Somewhat distance and aloof from other crew members, has been described as "stodgy". Has also been described as a "pompous ass" by some. Has a mechanical, artificial heart.

Kirk- Strengths; Strong leadership skills, confidence, creative, brilliant strategist.

Weaknesses; Has a pretty big libido- which includes androids, about 5 or so past lovers, at least one child out of wedlock, flirtatious with female subordinates. Has been manipulated because of his big weird libido.

Also known to have impulsive tendencies like Sisko.

Janeway- Strengths; Strong sense of leadership and perseverance which resulted in her getting her crew home and receiving a promotion. Has a strong scientific background. Very loyal to her crew, understanding and caring.

Weaknesses; Without sufficient amount of coffee, she can turn into a bitch, unless a suitable substitute can be made . Has been known to be physically violent to aliens if she doesn't get enough sleep.
