Street Fighter: 1994 movie starring Jean Claud Van Damme

So I just watched this again, and it wasn't too bad. Some really great moments as well. The Guile vs Bison fight was done reallly well. Van Damme was doing so many signature guile moves, as was Julia. So with the advent of fan edits, could this movie be edited down to a perfect movie? The main problem I had with it is that there were too many characters crammed into one movie.

Characters like Dhalsim and Blanca should've been left for a sequel. We didn't even get a hint of Dhalsim's powers. In the hands of a more seasoned action director, this could've been a solid action movie. This was this particular director's first movie, and from what I know his last.

Say what you will about the new Street Fighter movie, they're taking a much better approach with the characters. As long as we get hints of familiar characters droping by for future movies, I think it'll be great.

Who else has had similar viewings of Street Fighter, and come a way with a foundness for it?

My fondness for it stems entirely from it's crapocity. What a terrible freaking movie. NONE of the fights are done well, and the final battle between Bison and Guile is laughably bad, and only gets worse when Julia starts doing his worst Superman impersonation.

This movie is hilariously bad in how inept it all is.

I bet that the Chun Li movie will be much worse though. :p

My biggest complaint is that Ryu and Ken are basically insignificant characters... probably because Van Damme needed the screen time. Ryu doesn't even get to do a real fireball.

I saw the 94 movie about a year ago and I found it a lot of fun, albeit stupid fun. It was full of action and colorful characters with crazy costumes, so I was happy. And poor Raul Julia... he makes the movie, good or bad! I actually miss movies like this and TMNT2, ones that are just so crazy over the top and silly but stupid fun.

"I'm gona gette on meh boate ande I'm goeing up rever ande I'm goeing tu kik.... That sun of a bitsch Bizon's ass SO HURD!... That de nex Bizon wanabe.... Iz gena feil it! Now whu wuntz tu goe hume and whu wuntz tu goe withe mi!?"

Strange coincidence, I bought this just yesterday because for £3, I couldn't resist.

If de Souza had just written it (he wrote Die Hard, remember, so he knows what he's doing) and an experienced director had been at the reins, it would probably have been a lot better received. (It still wouldn't have been a good movie, but might not have been as panned either.) There's a load of tongue-in-cheek stuff going on that gets lost because the direction is so flat.

Another recent £3 'why the hell not?' supermarket buy of mine was Dead Or Alive, another beat-'em-up game adaptation. It's interesting to compare the two: both have equally ridiculous plots and 2D characters, but DOA had a director who knows how to shoot action and is a martial arts specialist... and it actually had lots of fighting. Street Fighter only had three or four fight scenes throughout the entire movie!

It must be said that Street Fighter was a pretty pants movie, but anything that has Jean Claude in i just have to watch, same with Seagal and Lundgren, i just love those over the top action movie actors, who never seem to do anything but kick somebody's arse for great justice.

I have to agree with payndz201 on DOA, the fighting scenes were much, much better in that film and seemed much more like the game than Street Fighter did, but it also suffered from the usual 'plastic characters' we see in many game to film adaptions.

This reminds me, it's good to see that production of the Tekken film has got back on track, and that it's been directed by Dwight H. Little, who has apparently been involved in series like Prison Beak and Bones. I must say i have high-ish hopes for this film.

David.

I remember watching this movie and feeling like brain cells were dying one by one. Like a good bar hopping night, I decided to surrender to it and just go with the flow and enjoy it's absolute intent to not be a good movie. By the end, I remember groaning and thinking the "group shot" at the end was the best part of the movie. ;)

I agree that "DoA" and "Street Fighter" are spiritually similar films, but "DoA" managed to entertain me for its entire length. The people behind it knew how to pander. There were good fight scenes from some surprising people, and when there wasn't fighting, there was fun T&A and when neither of those were around, there was some fun humor and silliness.

"DoA" is aware it's a silly film and revels in it while "Street Fighter" felt more like someone started out trying to make a fun film and then shrugged and gave up part way through.

Throw in the Masters of the Universe on a double bill with Street Fighter and I am there.

Street Fighter '94 can't hold a candle to Masters of the Universe.

Oddly enough both films feature post credits scenes with the thought-to-be-dead villain being revealed as still alive. (Which I didn't know about Street Fighter until last year) And neither got a sequel.

For some Street Fighter was the worst movie they've seen in their entire lives, but for me it was just tuesday.

If Kylie had twice as much screen time and half as much clothes this movie might have been bearable instead of an absolute piece of shit.

An opportunity lost.

But I will say this for Van Damme, JCVD is the best film he has ever made, hands down, and everybody should rent, steal, buy or borrow it ASAP
