Romulans were a much more important part of Picard's life at this point
I got the impression that Picard largely came to peace with the Borg, seeing them more as a victim than anything in season one. The trauma would always be with him, but perhaps not as haunted by it. I feel like that’s another thing that was largely ignored in season three.
Not just ignored, but basically undone so Matalas could do it again his way, like Data's death, Troi and Riker having dealt with their son's death, or Picard coming to terms with who he is in the new era.
Not making any mention of Kestra in season 3 was glaring.
She was referenced as being at the Academy. Meaning she likely got Borged.
Ugh.
Edit: actually that was a note from Matalas. Meaning he forgot about her and no direct reference in the season. Still, ugh. Double ugh actually.
Yeah the disrespect to the previous seasons was horrible, reducing a beautiful episode to them just talking about how they hated being on Nepenthe and reducing season 2 to "that weird shit that happened on the Stargazer" with a character who's backstory was literally just Sisko's.
It would be interesting to know if this bothered any of the actors.
Oh... you just reminded me of another problematic element of season 3 - how all the kids at the Academy got infected with a mind virus that only the adults could cure.
And somehow, none of the writers ever thought the optics of that decision wouldn't come off more than a little weird today? C'mon.

True but weren't his just additional information like how long the Rikers had lived on Nepenthe and not to fill in plotholes like Kestra and Elnor and creating more with the Titan?
IIRC, the bits Chabon did on the side were only worldbuilding things that didn't directly matter to the story. He just gave a little extra color to deepen the understanding.

My biggest criticism with Season 3 is that it ignores relationships for the characters from the past two seasons and basically says there's no other way for the crew to be special or make a difference except on the bridge of the ENTERPRISE.
For example there was a perfectly good Stargazer they could have built up and made as illustrious as its predecessor especially given the significance of the Stargazer to Picard.
I don't think fans care much about the Stargazer, if I'm being perfectly honest. Star Trek, for good or ill, is closely identified with the Enterprise.
It's time for a new starship.
They've tried multiple times. Defiant, Voyager, Discovery...
Right until we get moments like Picard and it's back to it and can questions of "Where's the new ENTERPRISE?"
Yes, it's iconic. Yes, it's why we keep going back to the TOS era. Yes, it's also annoying.
