The Duffers have stated that this is not meant to be a dark series and even though deaths happen in the context of the story they want it to be hopeful, not bleak.
Jason could be a lot worse. Much of his terrible behavior proceeds from legitimate feelings of concern/affection towards Chrissy, a real life national hysteria about things like D&D and ignorance of the town's supernatural menace.
Mike and Nancy's Dad cracks me up every time I see him. The guy is just so disconnected and oblivious, and... boring, he's like a personality black hole. This is a guy just 'going through the motions' of existence. It's hard to imagine a babe like Cara Buono going for a guy like that, and her home life outside of her kids must be a living hell, until Billy comes along and gives her (and the other bored housewives) the tingles.
I think we're all more amused by how useless Ted is in every moment instead of breaking that stereotype. He's supposed to be the epitome of the Bumbling Dad from 80s movies and sitcoms. Of course, it is a little annoying how they try to explore those stereotypes with other characters like Steve (who was a deconstruction of the 80s Jock character) but after all these seasons some characters have stayed in their cliche.
I was wondering whether I should just state the conclusion Random YouTube Guy #83954 (aka Dan Murrell, a well regarded film critic, box office reporter and former writer for Honest Trailers) came to. In hindsight, maybe I should have done so.As of five days ago, the answer is emphatically no.
I'm much more inclined to believe the writers than Random YouTube Guy #83954.
