Strange New Worlds story in which the Borg Assimilate the Q Continuum

Hey everyone! My Google-fu is failing me today. Does anyone remember the Strange New Worlds story in which the Borg assimilate the Q Continuum? Then V'Ger shows up... crazy story, but so very good!

Which collection is it in, and what is the title? I can't seem to remember.

Thanks!

YES! Ah, thank you so much. Really appreciate it!

Re: Strange New Worlds story in which the Borg Assimilate the Q Contin

It was also hinted as a possibility in Before Dishonour, when Borg-possessed Janeway told to Q's wife that the cube was capable of analyzing and assimilating the continuum, Janeway's persona surfacing briefly when she told Q's wife to leave before it was too late.

Re: Strange New Worlds story in which the Borg Assimilate the Q Contin

^I never bought that as anything more than the Borg's arrogance, or their complete lack of understanding of just what the Q Continuum is. The Borg may be relatively more powerful and advanced than humans, but they're still primitive and powerless next to the Q. The Q operate at an effectively godlike level, or close enough to be indistinguishable. The Borg are just a clunky blend of grey goo and zombies. Maybe they can assimilate anything physical from our universe, but the Q transcended physicality ages ago, if they ever had it.

Re: Strange New Worlds story in which the Borg Assimilate the Q Contin

Possibly, but the thought is an enticing one. I also loved Q's chastising of q in the episode "Q2":
"If the Continuum's told you once, it's told you a thousand times: DON'T PROVOKE THE BORG!"
There are a number of ways you could read Q's expression during that scene, but the scariest is to imagine that he's showing genuine fear.

Re: Strange New Worlds story in which the Borg Assimilate the Q Contin

I'm with Christopher here. The concept of the Borg being able to assimilate the Q...... No. There literally is nothing to assimilate. They don't exist in any sort of way that the Borg can understand or relate to.

Re: Strange New Worlds story in which the Borg Assimilate the Q Contin

I'm not convinced the Q don't use technology to achieve lots of their tricks. And if they do, assimilation may be a lot more plausible than if they tried to assimilate God by storming a church.

I'm gonna have to hunt down that story now - it sounds interesting!

I think you're absolutely right, we have no way of knowing - then again, my gut says the intention behind the way the Q were portrayed throughout the years is that they no longer need technology.

Re: Strange New Worlds story in which the Borg Assimilate the Q Contin

I used to think that much of what the Q did was just illusion, but there have been too many times when they've been shown to have powers on a truly cosmic level -- like when their civil war was setting off supernovae all over the galaxy. Nothing we've seen the Borg do is anywhere remotely near that level of power. The idea that the Borg come anywhere close to the Q/Organian/Douwd tier of the universe is simply giving the Borg far too much credit. The Caeliar come closer, about as close as a corporeal species could be expected to, but the Borg are a degenerate offshoot of Caeliar technology, much less advanced in their capabilities.

I really doubt that Q would've used the Borg as an object lesson for Picard if he'd considered them a threat to himself or his continuum. He didn't have a problem with provoking the Borg then, when it served his purposes. That "Don't provoke the Borg" line in "Q2" may reflect the universal pattern of parents to forbid their children from doing things that they themselves do all the time. More fundamentally, it reflects that "Q2" is a totally stupid episode.

The concept of technology that can at least blunt energy beings interests me, though--we at least got some of that in Stargate.

Riker would know. He didn't mention it !

Q's could pretty much 'wish' the Borg out of existance anyway...

Yeah, but that was technology invented by those same energy beings. I'm sure that a Q could create an anti-Q weapon if they really wanted to; in fact, we know they could, given the Continuum civil war.

Re: Strange New Worlds story in which the Borg Assimilate the Q Contin

They even showed up as civil war weapons.

So the most powerful weapon ever seen on Trek (apart from nukes) were actual weapons.

Fitting.

I think Tuvok even held another Q at bay with one--since there were physical at that moment.

It would be nice to flip a switch on some preachy Metrons though.

Re: Strange New Worlds story in which the Borg Assimilate the Q Contin

The explanation in the story in question (by Derek Tyler Attico) was basically that
the Q are extremely advanced mathematicians. Recently, Borg activity has seemingly ceased completely, with the collective focusing all of their thoughts on one purpose: solving the equation that gives them access to the Q Continuum.

It really is a fascinating and compelling story, and it won the grand prize in Strange New Worlds 8. Deservedly so, I might add.
