Stormtrooper vs. Redshirt Wired Poll

Wired's Geek Dad blog is doing a poll to determine who would "win" a fight to the death, a red shirt or a stormtrooper The problem is that both seem so hapless and hellbent on dying that they'd both lose. The blog gives it to the the redshirt, but the poll has stormtroopers in the lead. Go vote for the redshirts!

 A most stimulating line of thought!

That cheered me up. Thanks for the link.

That made me laugh.

I voted for the redshirt out of loyalty to ST, but I suspect it would actually be the opposite ... redshirts are just too good at finding ways to die. I was surprised the writer gave the edge to the redshirt.

This is a good thread.

And me, sorry gang, but I voted Stormtrooper. Not that they seem all that competent, but my god, Redshirts made a profession out of finding new and unique ways to die.

Technically, I'd have to go with the Redshirts.

We'd distract the Stormtroopers just long enough for the heroes to beam in and cut them to ribbons.

It would be a draw. The stormtroopers never hit anyone, and the redshirts are always getting hit by the baddies weapons. So you have guys who can't shoot shooting and missing the guys who die from weaponsfire, and to my knowledge can't hit anything themselves. So, my guess is that what would happen is that both sides would stand around shooting at each other, destory everything around them, but never hit their targets. So unless the planet blows up from a misplaced shot, the battle will rage forever.

So I guess my vote is "teh wimenz"

Ah no, the problem for the redshirts is that their survivability versus Stormtroopers depends entirely on whether or not the target is important to the plot (note the very first appearance of Stormtroopers quite effectively taking down the crew of the Tantive IV).

The best guess as to how important a character is that the Stormies are after could be determined by whether or not the character is named (even the Jedi the clones kill don't get onscreen names), so if the redshirt is named, the chances of survival increase.

If it's a group of redshirts versus a group of Stormies, at least one redshirt will die or at least hit, just to demonstrate the threat (the reason why redshirts always suffer, to demonstrate said threat, in this case the Stormtroopers). Now, if the redshirts are named, after this point, they'll probably win, cause they're the good guys. If they're not named, it's not likely they will, but it's either a stalemate or a loooong protracted battle.

^That's true. But four redshirts (at least) were pwned by Nomad (a freaking floating garbage can!) in 'The Changeling'. So I'd say they're equally hapless.

plus Stormtroopers do tend to die more often then Redshirts do.
I wonder about that. The article talk points out how useless stormtrooper armors is
, one shot from a blaster goes right thru.

Listening to my bothers and uncle talking of being in Mogadishu and Iraq, they told of friends being shot while wearing body armor, knocked down, knocked out and not immediately getting back up. Not dead (thankfully), just not doing a lot of moving.

In star wars, how many of the troopers were actual dead?

.
