Storing photos

While watching coverage of the floods in Queensland I have heard people say that they have lost all their photos, or the luckier ones have said that they managed to save their photos.

if something really bad happened to my home losing my photos would not be so bad as I have most of the important ones stored online (at Flickr and at Photobucket). I was wondering how many of you do the same thing. If not, why not?

I think I have some photos on an external drive somewhere. Maybe. I don't bother really because pictures aren't a huge deal to me.

I think I'd be sad about losing my wedding album, but the photographer probably has a backup anyway.

I don't have very many photos and those that are worth keeping I have on my photobucket account.

Do have about 100 pictures of my cat, starting to wonder if I should get some help about that

Do not count on it. Back em up yourself.

All of our family photo albums were drenched when our basement flooded 10 or so years ago. My mom was really upset about it. For Christmas that year, I went through every single photo to what I could salvage and made an abridged photo album with what was left. My mom cried. I won Christmas that year. :D

Hell, I thought everyone these days had their old paper photo albums scanned and stored on CDs. With at least one backup copy in a safe place for important stuff.

You can never have too many cat pictures!

Neither of my sisters, or my mother do. I don't think any of them own a printer, let alone a scanner. I have been bring my mother's photo albums home to copy. My eldest sister says she wants all of Mum's photos after Mum's gone. that fine by me because I will have copied all of them.

My parents photo collections are another matter, but most of my pictures are digital and I have multiple backups of those. There are no less than six hard drive backups in the house, my website and one off-site disk drive. I did shoot about a shoebox worth of pictures in my film days. Last year I went though that box and scanned the photos I wouldn't want to be without. I had the negatives scanned for really valuable ones at a local photo shop.

Ironically, today I began a plan to scan all my early photos. Back up to hard drive but also email them to myself.

All of my pre-digital photos are just randomly stored in folders and bags, and not even organized very well. Pretty bad.

Digital, though, are all stored on my laptop and backed up to the external hard drive that I always have with me.

I upload all my new stuff to Flickr. I have yet to get around to uploading all of my scanned photos there though.

I have scanned most of the family photos and have stored those on CDs. But it's not really adequate...

Several of the family photos are from the mid 1800s. Their age+feel+scent is an integral part of the experience of the photograph ~ knowing that it has been looked after for that long, through 5+ generations, from before anyone had even heard of the term 'world war'. Some things just can't be backed up.

I actually started thinking about this a couple years ago. A relative lives in the Mountains of Colorado. We started talking about a fire that nearly burned their house down, and she mentioned that - because this is a constant risk - in the summer months they have a bag by the front door at all times that contains some essentials in case they have to escape quickly, and it contains some cherished family photos. But, she was dismayed at what she'd have to leave behind. So, I helped her to scan everything of value to her. Originally we burned them to DVDs but, because those aren't stable over the long term, especially where fire is concerned, we got her a nice little portable external hard drive that she now keeps in her little fireproof box with other important papers and which they keep in the bag.

Of course, ever since then I've been saying that I need to do the same for myself, but have I? Noooooooo.

Actually, about 90% of the photos of value to me are digital now (thanks to my brother scanning all my mom's photos). I've got those all backed up on an external hard drive. But, I need to scan the rest. And then I should probably get myself one of those nice little portable hard drives as a secondary back-up and keep it in my fireproof safe.

People and pets are much more important to me, but pictures come in there pretty close.

I like Flickr I have about 8,000 pics on there. I get full membership free with my broadband contract. Well worth joining!
If nothing else it is another back up for my pictures if nothing else.
