SanDisk (Western Digital) must think gamers have big wallets as they've just released a PS5 branded 8GB SSD for $3800 USD ($5000 CAD). That's just insane. Of course, people have pointed out that WD itself released a drive with the same specs in 2024 for $579 USD.

The 8TB regular WD Black is around 1000 $/€, so double the price it was in 2024...
Making the new one 4 times that is insane...
I'm checking pcpartspicker and there are more for sale between 2000 and 4000 $/€, but still plenty cheaper options(for now)...
 
Is there even a market for inflated prices like this though? Who'd be likely to buy something like this? Who's their target market? It sounds to me like just based on the price alone they wouldn't be getting very many buyers.
 
Data centers are buying them all?
This is yet another reason most of my computers are getting older. I did get a 2tb SSD 2.5 inch for my laptop last year for about GBP100 if I recall, but upgrading my desktop, especially if it doesn't use old style connectors i going to be pricy:(
 
Data centers buying up the regular drives are one thing, but we're talking some specfic PS5 branded drives. If they are, that would just add salt to the wound over the fact that gaming has become very expensive within the last few years.
 
It's not just high-end SSDs - they are buying up the high-end CPUs, GPUs, and memory as well.

OpenAI racked up $1.85 TRILLION in debt by the end of 2025 because of Altman's obsession with cornering the market on parts that haven't even been made yet.

(Need to proof read - it's trillion.)

In order for OpenAI to turn a profit, it will need to become the most successful company in human history.

I hope it becomes the biggest failure in human history so I can afford a new PC again. And so my country doesn't run out of water by the end of next year.
 
^ Bezos thinks that data centres should be priority for water usage. Stuff that idea.

I know when I got my computer build for me, I got two hard drives. Not sure of the cost now. I kind of wonder what it will be when I decide next time in 4 or so years. I'd still go for 1Gb SSD as one of my hard drives.
 
Still using smaller - Got a 40mb (yes, mb) in use - but that's Amiga :D

Going through my dads usb drives, he's got a 128mb stick that works

This sort of thing has lots of precedent but the price is compouneded by the massive price increase becasue of the demand from AI.

Look back at any time a "official" drive has come out for any gaming device and watch te dollar signs spin.

and it's in no way unique to gaming consoles.

People will go on about the Apple tax and the price that you pay for ram and storage on their devices but not like the dells, hps and lenovos of the world are without sin.

people who don't know better, people who fall the the "official" label, people who want support if they have a problem upto and including warranty issues.

Sure, I realize that, but even when taking all that into account, it just feels so incredibly absurd, almost as if they're laughing at the situation gamers find themselves in.

Would be interesting to know the official statistics of how many are bought as I doubt it would be many.

It feels like another form of griefing. 8TB feels like it could be nice, but no way at that price. Maybe in a few years if and when the price comes down to a reasonable level . Currently on my PC, I have 2TB WD Black SSDs, one of which is the main drive, the other which is my gaming drive. I feel that's more than enough for the most part.
 
The Gabecube has finally had it's pricing revealed. Little over $1,000 for the base model and just over $1,400 for the best version.

I suspect the widely-circulated $700 figure was going to be the price before our friend Sam decided to ruin gaming for everyone.

I'm hoping this means an imminent Half-Life 3 announcement, since it was rumoured to be the launch game.
