Stonewall: The Movie

Shaka Zulu

Commodore
Commodore
A movie about the famous 1969 riot that sparked a movement as seen through the eyes of one young (white) man (hey, it's what I got seeing the trailer) from the director of Independence Day and Godzilla (1998).

Needless to say, many gays & lesbians aren't pleased about this (judging from the comments on YouTube and A.V. Club) and I'm not so sure either.

The movie comes out in September with a world premiere at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) first.

Roland Emmerich....I shudder to think of how this will turn out.

The PBS documentary on Stonewall was far more informative and less, er---shallow?--than this appears to be, at least judging from that clip. I guess we shall just have to wait and see. The trailer, however, does not exactly inspire much confidence.

I have no problem with him making this (as he's a gay man), but I think that he and his scriptwriters should have done some more historical research first and used the real people that were there as characters (the most prominent being three transgendered persons of color-Sylvia Rivera, Marsha P. Johnson and Stormé DeLarverie-who were the most prominent parts of the riot in the first place.) This movie might get critically acclaimed but most of the LGBT community will be super pissed off (and nitpicky) about it.

Based on his views on Shakespeare, I'm not expecting much historical accuracy from Emmerich. :p
