Stompin' Tom Connors....

In Canada Stompin' Tom Connors is pretty well known. And if for nothing else but the widely known The Hockey Song played in all the Canadian NHL arenas and possibly many other hockey arenas throughout the country.

But Stompin' Tom is known for many other songs that bleed true Canadiana. He wears his love for Canada on his sleeve and is forthright and unapologetic about it.

You could consider the 1970s as his commercial heydey, but since then ol' Stompin' Tom has continued to tour the country with his music even if he doesn't get played on the radio anymore. His supposed favourite venues are clubs and bars where he can get right up close to his audience. His music is laced with goodnatured humour, and while some of it can make you think :wtf: you're likely to do so with a smile.

I will say that I consider it a travesty that when the CBC refused to renew for the rights to use the Hockey Night In Canada theme they apparently never seriously consider trying for the rights to use Connors' The Hockey Song, a song widely considered to be Canada's second unofficial national anthem. Instead they opted for a song writing contest that resulted in a pretty much unmemorable tune devoid of feeling.

My question here, though, is how well might Stompin' Tom Connors be known beyond Canada? I believe he's played in Europe or at least England some years back. But is he even known beyond Canadian borders?

Anyone?
