Long live Star Trek... it is showing on SyFy right now, too... today I think it's a back-to-back marathon type thing.

i thought BBC contract with star trek had finished? has it been reactivated

BBC America is a commercial channel, part of BBC Worldwide. It's completely separate to the UK TV channels.

In the UK Virgin 1 currently holds the rights to TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise. Not sure about TOS...

The airing of TNG on BBC was always rather unreliable. All too often, it was something like this: "And The Next Generation will return in x weeks time after the snooker!" This was my exsposure to TNG, therefore I never got round to seeing how it ended until about 2000!

Yeah, it would always be delayed by cricket or something. I cheered when the BBC lost another sport contract!
