For all the noise made about Cumberbatch as an actor, I think Bana managed to be more interesting in what was a terribly underwritten part. Though much of his performance was generic sci-fi villain, he did have moments like "Hi, Chris. I'm Nero." Cumberbatch was NOTHING but generic sci-fi villain, a copy of a copy of copy, Blade Runner's Roy Batty with none of the off-kilter humor or genuine anguish.
And Roy Batty, like Montalban's Khan was sexy--his scenes with Pris crackle and there's real seductive menace in his cat-and-mouse game with Deckard. But thats where ID missed it: Khan is SEXY. That was key to "Space Seed" and, for all his scenery chewing, highlighted by his bare chest in Star Trek II: TWOK. Simply casting an actor of proven sex appeal is not enough if he doesn't get a chance to BE sexy.
They missed an obvious opportunity to have Khan, Carol Marcus and Kirk involved in a love triangle? For all the noise made about Cumberbatch as an actor, I think Bana managed to be more interesting in what was a terribly underwritten part. STID forgot one key thing about Khan: he's SEXY. That was key to "Space Seed" and, for all his scenery chewing, highlighted by his bare chest in Star Trek II: TWOK. They missed an obvious opportunity to have Khan, Carol Marcus and Kirk involved in a love triangle? She could have worked with him in developing the new torpedoes, only gradually learning that he and her father are up to no good. She would have a major conflict, choosing to side with Kirk and Federation values over not just her father but the man whose charm, intelligence and magnetism had her falling in love with him.
